?????Avid Magnum??????

Anybody know anything about the Avid Magnum. Looks interesting to me. And if they are any good, I would be happy to hear about any good ones that migh be for sale.

Unlikely that nyone is going to step up and buy my 180, so probably am not going to be able to afford a Supercub or Highlander, so looking for other good possabilities to fly around Co. and Ut. with, and keep the 180.

Thanks Gary

Gary, that sounds like an idea arrangement actually. Keep the 180 for the longer trips when you want to haul lots of gear, and pick up something super light for fun flying. There are several models in that category from the likes of Kitfox, Avid, Rans, etc. Our hangar neighbor has a Kitfox 5 "Outback" that is very cool looking bird.

Some of them have folding wings too, which means you could probably wedge it into a smaller hangar along side a 180, et al.

Re: ?????Avid Magnum??????

I built a Magnum, actually I assisted a doctor with more money then time, about 12 years ago. I flew off the 40 hrs also. With 150 hp it got off quick and the handling was great. I especially remember being able to bank it up in a turn, and it would just stay there, pretty much hands off. Lots of baggage room also. While it got off quick due to horsepower, and flew great, it was a little hotter landing then I prefer, hot being defined as in the high 40's. Check with Louis Hart up in Rexberg Id, it may be available.

Thanks Guys.

Just kinda gathering info at this point, but they look interesting. Also, I don't have enough $$$ to outright buy one, but my work and credit are good. Any preferred places for loans for this type of A/C.

I found one in Fla. with IO-360. I suspect not much faster, but shorter T/O and better climb. And bigger fuel burn,
but just when using the extra power. What I call the grin factor, and worth it.

Wonder if they put VG's on these and can slow them down any for landing. I think the spec's said 36mph stall

I called Mr. Hart. Nice guy. The plane was sold several years ago. Wished that he had it back. Said that it flew "different", but a good performer.

Re: ?????Avid Magnum??????

My friend Doug is an expert sheet metal guy and he and his father in law built an Avid Magnum. His father-in-law has a T206 and wanted an airplane he could play around in.

The story Doug tells is that they worked for a while trying to trim the airplane but he was never satisfied with the results. It was also a little hotter than they expected. His father-in-law wasn't a super sharp pilot anyway but he scared himself nearly to death one day in Nevada and the Father-in-law told Doug he was getting rid of it...........to the scrapyard!!! He wouldn't sell the thing because he felt someone would wad it up and come after his life's earnings, so thats just what they did. [-X

Re: ?????Avid Magnum??????

I know your question was about the "Avid Magmun" and you might be open to other suggestions. There was a Murphy Rebel in Colorado for sale recently. Actually I think the owner posts on this site. From what I remember he moved up to a bigger plane.

I am certainly open to other suggestions. I know Brad, who used to be Durangorebel, and is now Durangoskywagon. His plane is a nice plane, but I suspect that the Magnum will out perform the rebel. Probably not as large a baggage area, but I'm OK w/that. I plan to fly pretty light. If I have to haul a bunch of stuff I will take the 180.

Thanks for your thoughts Gary
