Backcountry camping locations

Is there a comprehensive book or website that lists all locations in the western US where one can fly into to camp? I'm looking specifically for backcountry locations.

Re: Backcountry camping locations

Here's a few of my suggestions, I'm sure I forgot something, so feel free to add. There is really not a one-stop shop guide for information covering all western states, but between BCP, Shortfield and other resources you can certainly find what you're looking for.

Oregon: BCP, Shortfield, https://www.oregon.gov/aviation/Pages/m ... ports.aspx
Washington: BCP & Shortfield https://www.shortfield.com/
California: BCP, Shortfield, RAF, SOCAL: http://www.kernvalleyairport.com/socal- ... guide.html
Idaho: Fly Idaho! (eBook) (http://www.flyidaho.com), IAA: https://idahoaviation.com/idaho-airstrip-network
Utah: Fly Utah! (http://www.flyidaho.com), UBCP: https://utahbackcountrypilots.org/airstrips/
Arizona: APA: http://azpilots.org/pilot-info/backcountry-airstrips
Colorado: Fly Colorado (http://www.FlyColorado.org), RAF, & BCP
New Mexico: New Mexico Pilots Association: http://www.nmpilots.org/back_country.asp & RAF, BCP
Wyoming: Shortfield / BCP
Montana: RAF (https://theraf.org/airport-map), BCP, Shortfield

AM:

In addition to the suggestions above, are you familar with Galen Hanselman's books? He has written comprehensive books on ID, UT and MT. Best and most complete backcountry guide you can find.

Website is: http://www.flyidaho.com/

Also, RAF was instrumental in getting a new website going. Web address is: https://airfield.guide . The website is realtively new, so content is still on the light side, but one day should be a great onestop site to look at all backcountry options in the area of the country you are interested in.

Good Luck! L

I don't know about camping, but there are a decent number of public use grass strips in NC & SC. I've only flown into a couple of them, but they range from 1400' with trees at the end to 3600' with no obstructions in sight. There are actually a couple with beacons and runway lighting.

If anyone is interested, I can list some of them out for reference.

I’m interested in the list. Especially South Carolina.

Re: Backcountry camping locations

Hi ! We have in province of Quebec (canada)a beautiful camping site, an old military runway (8200x200) concrete, middle of nowhere !

http://www.pierregillard.com/articles/2015-casey.pdf

Each year (september) there is a camping fly-in . There is also a river for floatplane . Just 160 nautical miles north of Montreal.
25 years ago , there have been , at this place , the biggest cocaine seized in the history of quebec : 9000 pounds!!!

It’s a « must see » for aviator !!!

I set up a map that shows all of the unpaved public use airports I am aware of in NC & SC.

You obviously need to do your own research, especially since a few of these have interesting obstacle or airspace considerations.

Also, I don't know if camping is allowed at any of these. It might be a good idea to call the manager before you plan anything.

I may update this with a couple more states worth, but no promises.

Edit: It is helpful to include a link.

I camped at 2B3 (Parlin Field) near Newport, NH last September. They not only allow camping, but encourage it. Airport manager is great - mowed the site for me before I taxied into it and then brought me some more firewood in case I needed any. Two runways - 18/36 is about 3450x50 and paved and 12/30 is about 2000x60 grass, through some big trees close to the northwestern end of it.

Will be looking for may places to fly to and camp in New England come springtime as well.

This is great!! I have the same ones on my list in SC for when I get my PPL, but the map makes it a bit nicer/easier to view. I also have a few of the NC locations, but not all that you show. Thanks!

Another beautiful grass strip is Gadabout Gaddis ME08 in Bingham Maine.
It has designated camp sights and is on the Kennebec River with a large grocery store righr across the road.
