Backcountry food!

Ok, So i am hungary at the moment, surfing the forums and watching "no reservations" with Anthony Bordain on the travel Channel.

Which brings me to the golden question: What type of food and or great recipes would you like to cook/share for the next time your overnighting it.

I myself like to take a pack of all beef hebrew national franks, a sweet onion, wheat buns, and a jar of homeade pear relish, when I go camping. MMMNNNN!

I like the Dutch Oven recommendation from the other thread given above. We take a 12" hard anodized aluminum oven along plus an MSR stove and cookset. Here is one easy recipe we enjoy:

Dutch Oven Pizza
2 pkg crescent rolls
1 jar pizza sauce
1-1/2 lb ground beef
8 oz shredded Chedder Cheese
8 oz shredded Mozzarella Cheese

Brown ground beef, drain. Unroll crescents and line bottom of oven with them (crust) spread pizza sauce. Add beef and cheese. Make top crust from 2nd crescent package. Bake 30 min @ 350.

ah hell, this is best one so far...

leave jc or soldier or wilson and head a quick 20 min. to mccall for
hot mexi food, at the airport, head back before dark and shut down...

Sounds good, but cant help but wonder what the bathroom facilitys are like at JC or soilder? probably have to be awefully familiar with where they are, upon your return! lol

Finally a topic we can sink our teeth into.

Well since I came down with diabetes a year or so back I have to treat food in a whole new way.

I loved to eat for 48 years. Never been a gourmet while camping. I have 28 years of fire house cooking so I know my way around a kitchen.

Camping was, chips, beer, whiskey, good steak cubed and cooked on my industrial fire stick and eaten with fingers. Loaf of bread and jar of peanut butter for when the good stuff was gone.

Now any fruits, whole grain breads, Adams Peanut butter, lean chicken, stag chili straight out of the can. Diet pop, water. COFFEE!

Hmmm, I thought beer and whiskey WERE the two major food groups for backcountry aviation.

Quick & easy: coffee, instant mush, soups/stews. Solo: one pot, one bowl,one mug, one spoon, and you're good to go. Add cookies & adult beverages for a more well rounded diet. If you shoot a grouse rabbit or rat around camp, you can throw it into the soup/stew for added protein.
Are them MRE's any good? They look like they'd be handy but I've heard that MRE is milspeak for "Meals, Rejected by Ethiopians". :?

Absolutely! Don't forget the coffee! Gotta have a cup or two and inject a fresh Bali Shag Blue (sometimes the Red) when I open my eyes in the morning.

Stove Top Stuffing is super light-weight, prepared using river water, high in calories and very tasty.

You guys eat like prisoners of war! Here is an idea of what we would eat on a typical day of a 4-5 day remote camping trip.
Breakfast-French press coffee, instant oatmeal w/raisins or dried cranberries, brown sugar. Occasional donut.

Lunch-Cheese, salami, Top Ramen w/chopped broccoli, carrots, onion, cauliflower, (prepped in a zip lock) and don't forget bottled hot sauce. Canadian beer.

Dinner-Frozen steak or fried chicken brought from home, Lipton Side Kick meals, w/powdered milk, butter/margarine, chopped veggies, green onion, bell pepper, etc. maybe a cut up chicken breast,hot sauce, Doritos or some other snack. Wine of choice, decanted into plastic containers with dinner. Pre dinner cocktails can be either rum, scotch, rye etc. If night is cold, hot buttered rum.

Kipper snacks, sardines, saltines, maybe dry salami are great. Remember, we feed 3 mouths, darn dog gets her two meals per day, plus her share of our 3 meals. I also take a Coghlan's popcorn popper, veg oil, and popcorn.

Now you get an idea of why I am 230#s, but we don't suffer.
