Backcountry lanterns?

Is there a lantern that will burn multiple fuels like the MSR stoves?
It would be great to have a lantern that would operate with the MSR fuel bottles.

Re: Backcountry lanterns?

Maybe someone has something that doesn't use a mantel, I hope. That in my experience has always been the problem with lanterns in the back country: Every time I try to pack one of the things to move somewhere, the mantel breaks, and a new mantel is required.

Frankly, I gave up a while back and just use LED lamps now. They'll last forever on a set of batteries. Not as good a light as some lanterns, but also not as noisy, and no mantels to worry about.

Re: Backcountry lanterns?

Ha, I agree. A mantel is an amazing thing, insane how much luminance they can put out, until you pack the lantern laying on its side and the mantel snaps off from its own weight and turns to dust.

But Terry, what you have wished for does exist. After looking closely, the mantel on this Snow Peak one attaches at both ends. The problem with most mantels is that they attach only at one end, so the leverage exerted at the attachment end is constantly stressing the brittle material.

I'm with MTV. I use an LED lantern myself. Works great.

I've got one of those from years ago. It is a nice brass construction with a soft leather bag to store it. I, too found it effective. 8)

Back when Nalgene bottles were milk-jug white, you could balance a flashlight on top of the bottle, and the entire thing would glow nicely.

Unscrew the gas cap on the airplane, stuff a rag down the hole and light it with a match... You'll have light for hours.

Re: Backcountry lanterns?

If you want those solar charged type just go to Walmart and get one of those "lawn lights" that people line their sidewalks with about $3-5. They are sold in the gardening department.

I think Whales are out of season in Utah. Haven't seen any in the stores all summer.

Speaking of Whales, this is how not to depose of your dead whale!

Re: Backcountry lanterns?

I have the Snow Peak and I am pretty happy with it. Nice and light, and bright for its size.

Another option is a little bigger (5.5lbs), the dual fuel colemen NorthStar Dual Fuel Lantern. It has a glove cage and a single mantle that connects at the both ends. I have burned white gass, avgas, and mogas w/o any issue. The mantle has also held up well to tipping over while clam digging and to bouncing around in my pickup box over miles of gravel.

Re: Backcountry lanterns?

Bought this at a truckstop 36 bucks. If wall charged or thru a cigarette lighter it is good for 5 hrs or hand crank it for 1 minute for 20 minutes of light. No batteries to change ever. About 2 lbs. Solid state seems to work. Used it three nights at Oshkosh and it never dimmed and I could read departure proceedures the night before leaving with it. Probably used it a total of 3 hours there. Never needed to hand crank it. No fuel to worry about except elbow grease.

Re: Backcountry lanterns?

I bought this today at Wally World (camping dept.), hi and lo settings, plus flashing red (good for those romantic tent times, hopefully with a partner), plus a magnetic base. Note small size (beer bottle strictly for sense of scale purposes). Runs over 70 hrs on 4 AA batteries. Has a very trick reflector/diffuser that, hung from the "ceiling" of a tent, should give some good general illumination. LED of course.

Best of all FIVE BUCKS! :D Quality is for sure 5 bucks worth, actually quite good. This, plus a previously obtained LED headlamp for spotlighting, along with backup candles, will be my new lighting strategy. Be sure to have a second headlamp for romantic encounters, again hopefully with another, as they clearly show where your attention is directed if you are both wearing them (and nothing else) it can be riotously fun!

I love the fact that the LED technology is coming down so fast in price, I am very glad I do not own stock in a compact flourescent bulb company, as LED's are set to take over home lighting in the very near future. Look for home size bulbs at Home Depot, Lowes, etc. in less then a year. They'll be the cheapest and most expensive bulbs all at the same time:most up front cost, lowest operating plus super long life. In office buildings the lack of heat output will save tons of air conditioning costs and equipment.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Re: Backcountry lanterns?

Like others, I'm tired of messing with a new mantle every time so today I bought one of those $5 Walmart LED lanterns, also a set of 3 LED flashlights for $18 from Costco. Both seemed like a good deal.
The flashlights work great, very bright on 3 AAA batteries (included). Can't vouch for the lantern yet, no batteries included & the AA's I had at home turned out to not be there. But for $5, as long as it works at all how can you go wrong? Nice & small, easy to pack along for camping or have in a drawer at home for when the power goes out. Ditto for the LED flashlights.
