Baffle issue IO520D cessna 185
Have problems with your aircraft? Maybe just questions about how best to tune or adjust something? Regs or maintenance? Need to know the best way to do something?
Hi guys,
While doing my oil change I noticed that one baffle was kind of loose. It is the little plate between #1 and #2. The plate has a screw on the outboard side but nothing on the inboard side.
If looked at the 3 other baffles like this one and they looked good. I’m not sure but I think they all have a screw on the outboard side and that the plate is simply sitting on a part on the inboard side. I think the one I am having a problem is supposed to sit on the crankcase but the plate has cracked so now she is loose and pushed more downward.
What do you guys think? It looks hard to replace with everything in place there..?
My #1&3 are the hottest ones so I’m wondering if it’s the reason why.
Thanks for your help!

I believe that baffle is held tight up against the cylinder fins by a long AN3 bolt that attaches to a bracket over-top of the cylinders. Is that bolt there?
If the baffle needs to be removed, there should be room to wiggle it out from below.

Doesn’t look much different than a new one.

Thanks for your feedback. Yes there is that one long bolt on the outboard side. But the plate is not tight at all against the fins, she mooves up to 30degrees downward. I tought there was suppose to be a second bolt or something because my plate is very loose. I’ll try to retorque it to see if it does something!
Thanks!

Thanks. Looks like yours is tight up there. I guess it’s also a good idea to add some sealant!

If you can't reattach the long bolt (it looks like the nutplate is missing), you can use lock wire to hold it in place, and +1 on using a little hi-temp sealant to close up the gap.
