BC Procedures checklist

I was unfortunate to have a brake fail after landing on a short airstrip in the not too distant past. I was fortunate though that it resulted in a fairly low speed non-violent ground-loop to nose stand in which nobody was even slightly injured and I was able to hike out to reach help. If I were at a 2000 foot strip, I would have gone around, but in this scenario, that would not have resulted in a favorable outcome.

After this, I added "pump the brake pedals for pressure prior to landing" to my checklist, all of the time, but especially in the wilderness and short strips with limited options.

Has anybody had any experiences that have resulted in amending their checklists, or have any checklist items that are applicable specifically to the type of flying that we do?

Re: BC Procedures checklist

I had the exact same scenario as you in a left brake failure on a very short one way strip into moose camp. It was either eat cotton wood trees at the end or a ground loop to the right followed by full power to arrest the backwards skid. It was an eye opening experience and I do the same as you now in pumping the pedal to make sure I get resistance back before landing.

The hurried mag check is out the window now too as it once led to a one mag take off that had me scratching my head as to why I was not getting full power on take off.

Re: BC Procedures checklist

Flew into Cedar Mt, Utah airstrip and right brake didn't work. After I got stopped I pumped it a few times and it seemed ok. Took off and landed at Mexican Mt airstrip. No right brake. Pumped it a few times. Seemed OK. Took off and flew to Hidden Splendor. No right brake again. Thought I was going to go off the cliff at the high end. Turned off the engine and hit left brake hard almost went into the bank on the side of the strip. Worked on the brake some more then flew to Huntington, again no right brake. Flew to Ogden and had A&P look at my right brake. It had salt and sand in it from Utah's west desert. He took it apart, cleaned it and it worked like a champ. Now I always spray water on my brake drums and pads when I get back from the desert!
