BCP Retirement Home-3

While picking our way through the weather, heading home from the Chicken Strip work weekend,
we had to put down to wait things out a little while.

Image

Found a beauty strip cleared out of the brush in ranch country that suited us well.
Image

Has a great little pilot's lounge built into the hillside at the low end of the strip.
Image

Secure door with mosquito screen.....for big mosquitoes.
Image

Even glass in the windows.

And how many FBO's still have baggage service at the ready?

Damn, I love Northern Nevada!!

Unless I'm mistaken, that's called Nine Mile Ranch, which is part of Baron Hilton's Flying M.

It's just over the hill between Hawthorne and Bridgeport, where the east fork of the Walker River flows thru a place called "The Elbow." When I lived in Hawthorne, I spent seven years crawling through that country on my four-wheeler, never tiring of the view.

Hey there Gump....

You know your country well.

Spoke to a cowboy who came to ckeck out why the planes landed....nice enough guy.
Shared some contact information.

Interesting.....got a call from ranch management yesterday evening, saying they were glad we were able to use the strip based on the no-go weather situation. But also making it very clear that it is private land and not a public use airstrip.....

Re: BCP Retirement Home-3

Hilton has a lease on about 30,000 acres BLM land (our land) surrounding his ranch. It's all fenced, signed, and patrolled.

But... There are county and USFS roads all over that area completely open for car, truck, ATV, and airplane.

Last time I landed near Nine Mile was about three miles towards Hawthorne at a spring/old stage house site called Fletcher. Beautiful place, sweet water flowing out into pools. I just used the public dirt road.

On ATV's it's unlimited. Gets you into Aurora, Bodie, Masonic, and hundreds of miles of solitude and scenery.

Re: BCP Retirement Home-3

I remember when the Ford family owned a Hugh chuck of real estate in CA that was great for dirt bike riding. The only requirement was to sign a waiver (or your parents, guardian).

Ford family were cool about everything. Times are changing!

Catalina is 99.9 percent private and can be used extensively for mostly free by anyone! Except camping permits cost now I heard?

Landed at Beaver Marsh (24-FEB) and the owner was delight to help and hoped I would return! The owner doesn't even fly.

I guess it's a status symbol now to hoard land? [-X

Lanai is private but nobody is out taking names! Just open land, beaches and good coves too!

Hey... What happens in Hawthorne stays in Hawthorne.

Name doesn't ring a bell though.

Re: BCP Retirement Home-3

NVflyer,
cool pics! Thanks!

I love post that go like this...

A guy posts some nice pics from a site way the Hell off the beaten that path nobody's ever seen before.
Then Someone else say's; "Yeah, that looks like ________, its somewhere between ________and_________!"
(BTW, Thanks Gump!)

Its at this point that the voices in my head say; "Click on Google Maps and see if you are smart enough to find it!"

Does anyone else have this particular affliction? Why do I feel the need to solve riddles like this?
In the foreseeable future I have no intention of ever going there but still I digress!

Wasn't smart enough either, never did find the place.

Cool story though.

This link should tell the tale of Snarkle Barbegazie, a little gnome lost in the vast desert wastelands of Nevada. Starring Nine Mile Ranch and the Flying M.

Just click on the first (upper left) pic to start the story line. Amazing what pilots and retired deputies can do with a little alcohol and some weapons.

Hey Gump,

I think you would enjoy the movie "SONNY BOY". It's on Hulu and other classic film sites.

Your pictures reminded me of that old flick! It's rated "R".
