I think I would find a way to open the gate from INSIDE the truck.

I wonder if he had been singing to the bear on the way up that road?

If I was that guy I would like to get my hands on who ever was taking the pictures, maybe a little help??? Or maybe that person is pretty smart and the photographs were taken from some distance off.

If I were going to release a Bear into the wilderness, I would have picked somewhere other than a bridge to do it like a meadow or somewhere where a already confused Bear would walk out and see open space not the guard rails on a bridge.
I am not a Bunny Hugger but that Bear died for no reason!

Did it die though? It looked like it took a beating when that trap fell on it, and if you look at the first pic of the bear it looks like it's missing a bunch of fur where the trap would have landed on it.[/quote]
IT did die, someone emailed the video to me and there was the ending shot of it in the back of the truck.

I'm not so sure I would have jumped out waving my hands and hollering at the bear myself. I still think it wouldn't be too hard to rig something that would open the trap from inside the truck. I don't know squat about bears, but anything that is bigger than me automatically earns my respect. I'm sure the guy on top of the trap didn't think he was in any danger, so the guy in the truck didn't have a plan if the bear turned on the guy outside of the truck.

Having been involved personally in a few bits of wildlife work that ultimately turned into goat ropes, I can tell you that it is really easy for some of this stuff to happen. And, it doesn't mean that the folks involved are necessarily incompetent or that they don't give a rip for the animals.
Stuff happens, and this is a classic case. Unfortunate for EVERYONE involved, including, of course the bear.
I can tell you, however, that in over 30 years doing this kind of stuff, I never met anyone in the field who didn't feel bad about losing an animal like this.
