Re: Bernard Idaho

Very nice landing and takeoff. Whether using apparent rate, which was steady all the way in, or that little thing on the dash, rate of closure was a steady brisk walk. You have found out that angle of descent makes little difference. When it has to be steep, we simply use more power to control the rate of descent. No bounce necessary.

The basic low ground effect takeoff was excellent. You didn't let the willow grove cause you to climb out of ground effect sooner than necessary. The rudder turn down the creek was nice, but try for a little more rudder and a little less aileron in the direction of the turn next time. Plenty of room with the creek, but an old stump where you didn't expect it could cause a cartwheel. In low ground effect, the wing needs be kept level with aileron while the rudder does the turning. Yes, you can step right down on it.

Those situations, like Bernard, illustrate how important it is to know which way is down hill and how we might get there in ground effect, if possible.

Re: Bernard Idaho

Very Nice!

I took the old 150 with 5's all around in there once on my way back from Lower Loon.
I spotted a Husky in there by himself and popped in for a visit. Very nice gentleman and an absolutely beautiful airplane.

It was the roughest strip I've ever landed on by far. Rattled me near to death. The Husky driver asked if I minded if he took video of my departure. I said no problem but it's going to take a while to get airborne. I used appropriate flaps for the occasion as well as every brisk zoom energy management doctrinal trick in Contact's book, as well as a few of my own. :) It's one strip the itty bitty tire program struggles on for sure.

Loved the video and keep them coming. Makes me want to head to "Church"

Re: Bernard Idaho

Rich,
In the 150 don't you typically use the apparent slow stroll closure rate method? If it were me I'd pull full flaps from clear up and slip it in like a parachute making sure to use correct rudder input at the right time. Thise gear will soak up nearly anything.

Observe motoadve's landings. No speed up at the bottom as you would have coming out of a slip, no need to slip with full flap apparent brisk walk rate of closure, no danger of putting a wing into the ground, power all the way down without speed up at the bottom, and no need to bounce.

Re: Bernard Idaho

Wannabe,

Lower Loon is pretty sweet. Just a natural place for a strip. I haven't made it in to Upper Loon yet, but I have heard it calling.

Here's a few pictures of Bernard.

Looking Downstream. It really is a beautiful place.

Here is a view looking upriver.

If you look closely at the grass in front of the airplane at the north end of the strip it is basically in raised clumps. This is what makes it so rough. I definitely would want 6's at least on the mains. It still rattles me just thinking about it.
