Best place to camp in Hells Canyon?

I've wanted to check out the Hells Canyon area for quite a while. The only strip I've been to in the area is Rogersburg and that was years ago. I'm looking for opinions on what would be the best strip to camp at for those of you who know the area well. Right now I'm leaning towards Big Bar but I'm open to suggestions. We will be heading that way tomorrow morning.

Dug Bar is a great place to camp. Easy access to a lot of other great strips from there. Hiking trails also! And the occasional herd of elk above camp in the evening. There is a road down to it but it's a long ways to drive in. That's a beautiful area. Have fun!

I like Memaloose because you get the sunrise and sunset.

Lord Flat is very cool, Sluice Creek if you have an emergency . Check the weather raining tonight and probably low ceilings early and some rain tomorrow.

Thanks for all the comments guys, I think we will go to Memaloose. Camping on the rim of the canyon will be fun, the hike to the Hat Point Watchtower looks cool too.

Plus, the views. But doesn't get pretty windy up there?

Re: Best place to camp in Hells Canyon?

Hells Canyon is a neat place to visit. I've rafted it four times and have been to most of the strips and to Sluice Creek, Big Bar, and Dug Bar this year. All are good and have their own unique characteristics. I second the comments about Dug Bar and Memaloose.

Just remember there is a reason it is not called Heaven's Canyon!

It can get damn hot and most everything there is trying to stab, bite, poison, or eat you. I'm still digging thorns out of my feet from April's rafting, hiking, and flying adventure to Sheep Creek. Don't go barefoot on the beaches (nasty stickers in the sand)! Poison ivy and rattlers are common. It can be tough on fido, too.

Now that the disclaimers are out of the way, don't let those things discourage you; just be aware of them and be prepared to deal with those challenges and you'll find it to be a unique and beautiful place to explore.
