He didn't seem 71 years old...younger if I recall. I had contacted him about doing a featured bushplane piece but that was prob 8 months ago.

Glad he survived. I hope he makes a swift recovery.

Z, if this is the guy you are talking about I met him also, he helped with the Minam Air lift.
I didn't think he was that old either, I didn't recognize the name but the plane looks the same.
Is that a common color for the conversion?
Hope he recovers to fly again.

I know my sarcasm is aimed at the press

The real question they need to answer is whether or not a flight plan was filed. ;)

I never noticed it until I looked back at the airstrip photos. This is heavily zoomed in from an entire airstrip photo, so its kind of blurry.

From what's described by others, my guess is the low stall speed of this particular aircraft helped substantially with suitability. In fact, the Peterson kit may have saved his life...

Were you the 172 in the orbit with the Maule and I?

Yes that was us. We followed your departure then went off to JC.

Tim

He crashed about the time we went over Profile Pass. An observer on the ground said he saw him come from behind the hogback in a turn, saw the nose start to drop and then he added a "boatload of power", the nose continued to drop, and he disappeared in the trees. The observer on the radio was trying to direct landing aircraft to the general area he thought the aircraft went down. A Skywagon made multiple passes with no luck in spotting it, my son made one more circle to loose altitude to began the approach, we passed right over the wreckage, we just happened to be in the right spot to see down into the trees. The most heartening fact was from the time we spotted the wreckage, called it in, flew the approach, coming in over the trees on final, to see the number of people headed down the strip to begin the rescue. The good thing is the pilot can be interviewed, so we can save a lot of effort on speculation. He was blessed to have someone see him go down, and to have a rescue party right on the spot, and there were probably people with a medical background in the rescue group. The chatter on the radio from the ground rescue personal was very professional and concise. They did good work. Hopefully, if the pilot wants too, he will fly again.

If he added a boatload of power that tells me the engine was running fine. My speculation is he just got it too slow and we all know what happens next. I am not saying that this pilot is in the category of you shouldn't fly. But we all know there's a lot of people with airplanes that really should not be in the sky.

I think we should hold off on the negative speculations until we get more facts or until the pilot has a chance to tell his side of the story.

I think age and experience can outweigh youth and overconfidence to a degree. Accidents will happen.

Be careful out there.

Re: Big creek accident sunday

Seems like a pretty experienced pilot, he was in one of the two Katmai's in the "Idaho Gold" videos of tooling around the backcountry with Todd Petersen in his Katmai.

Now that 60 something is here to stay, I gotta agree with the saying,

From the photos of the wreckage, it looks to me as if those trees saved his life. Shedding energy before you hit something solid is a life saver.
