For those who might have trouble locating Austin it lies at the geographical center on Nevada. Midway between the California state line to the West and that of Utah to the East and equidistant from the states northern and southern boundaries. It was named after Austin Texas.

Austin Nv airport. Ours (Big Pine) is better.

Actually, the center of NV is about 30 miles to the east. Take 50 east from Austin and go past Hwy 376. Turn right (south) on Belmont Rd and drive south about 14.5 miles.

I found a marker about a year ago. But not really sure 100% if it's the center of NV.



BTW...... if your brave and skilled enough. There is a road right by the marker you might be able to land on.

I knew it wasn't the exact center but I didn't know it was that far away.
As far as the airport picture I remember there was a time when I thought that was the Austin airport. I remember going up the hill from the airport into town.
Years ago I stayed in Austin for a couple of days but I can't recall why. I have always liked that town.

D Rat....... I see your point and should have mentioned. When your looking at a map of Nevada....... Austin appears to be directly in the center. Austin is a neat town. Great place to be from (as I was told by a friend ). I like that town and the surrounding area. Sure wouldn't mind spending a week or two around there. Lot's of great canyons, trails and scenery to see with out bumping into too many other people.

The blonde naturally. The Indian chick was a 10 for sure.

I was there and sad to say someone left some graffiti at the old hanger slab and wind sock. Too bad.

You know I don't know the history of that old airstrip. (I assume that is an old airstrip) If anyone actually lives in Austin maybe he (she) can enlighten me. It is hard to believe that Austin has a 6000' paved runway.

The picture of the airstrip above doesn't look like Austin, NV to me. Even if it was before it was paved. But, Pops will know for sure.

That photo doesn't look like Austin NV airport to me either. Even before pavement. Austin has two long wide runways that are only at a 30 degree angle to each other, not nearly as perpendicular as the runways in that photo. In that photo you can't see the parking area or the hangars which I think Austin has had since day 1 ????. This mystery is definitely a question for Pops.

Actually I know where the "real" Austin airport is located. Just as you described it. Although I think the airport ID changes every year.

O.K. I still remember many years ago while driving on Hwy 50 looking at that airstrip (the one in the picture) and thinking: Too bad they located the airport at the bottom of the hill below town. I am sure you can see it from the highway. I am not sure which direction I was driving so I might have seen it from above.

Lets talk about the Big Pine airport. I am sick of Austin.

This is from the paper in 1942. It should say East and South of Big Pine but who's counting?
