Big Rocks & Long Props, Backcountry Idaho DVD

I just finished a DVD on Backcountry Flying in Idaho. It features the well known places such as Dewey Moore, Mile Hi, Simonds, Vines, Fish Lake and a few more. There is both footage from the air (strut mounted camera for birds eye view) and on the ground of me landing my experimental Maule at these strips. There is a bonus section which includes: my own home strip (one way, no go around, 300 ft. short, narrow and downright scary sometimes), I also go to California and fly a 420 shp amphibious Maule, and a few other extras. Main movie run time 58 minutes, price is $16.95+S/H available on my web site only at this time. www.bigrockslongprops.com

I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it!

I got a preview of this video a few days ago and really liked it. It's straight forward and offers Greg's experienced perspective of these challenging airstrips. Plus, it's the only way a wannabe like me is going to see places like Simonds, and Dewey Moore :D

All things are possible to him that believes.

I thought bushwacker had a two blade prop? Has something changed on the nose?

OK, I ordered the video. Does it explain the changes to bushwacker? Or is that another airplane?

That's the Sherpa he flew in BRLP #2, I believe. Remember the infamous full throttle penetration (prop slicing through the water spray at high rpm). That's the one. Sorry to bring that up, Greg - but I can still hear the crazy sound that made. If you guys haven't bought #2, what are you waiting for? Winter?

Flying is magic... till you hit the trees.

Sherpa full power hydro

I actually had a few times flying the Sherpa that day when I got a quick wake up call. This is not your little Bushwacker you are playing with you had better be more careful. That was the second time you are referring to, the first time I was landing crossways at the pond (before the camera was set up). I touched down like I am use to doing in Bushwacker but the picture out the Sherpa is different and because the airplane has such great visibility even when the tail is low (I did not realize how low) I hit the bank of the pond with the tailwheel and was looking at the ground much closer then I had intended. I instantly put the wood to it and recovered. I have used a lot of luck up doing the stuff I do!

Just a week or so ago I was landing some tight places with a friend and noticed my left brake gave out as I was coming to a stop. It was still barely good enough to make turns so I decided to head back VUO but needed fuel so stopped at SPB first. When I made the last turn to my hangar the brake cylinder tab welded to the fuselage completely gave out (tore a whole right out of the 3/4" .035 tube as the tab came off). Now no left brake just 3 doors down from my hangar. I had thought it was just low on brake fluid up to that point. These are the types of things that can happen during the worst time. If it had broken during landing at my home strip with no warning I would probably be fixing some sheet metal. I should have inspected it as soon as I felt the first indication that something was not right but made an assumption that it was just low on fluid and I would add as soon as I got back. Lessen learned, no damage to the aircraft, there went some more of my good luck.

When we start flying...

....the Skygods give us two bags. The luck bag is full and the experience bag is empty. It is said that the experience bag needs to fill up before the luck bag becomes empty.

42 years and 30,000 hours later.....thank God that my LUCK bag isn't completly empty yet!!

Living the Dream

Hey Greg,

No need to defend your actions around me. I've watched your videos, talked with you, and even flown with you. You are a great pilot, great guy, and I learned a lot from you. Thank you! I got the Idaho video and watched it at work (not a good idea - I couldn't function at all). It was great!!!!!!! Total porno film. :D

My friends at work thought it was interesting how you spend some time just sitting in front of the camera, talking about how to be safe. I must say that I thought that was really good to see/hear. I've been in situations where people say that I make things look easy - even though they are not. I would say that the type of flying you do - you make it look easy. And it is not. I really liked how you cautioned people to be careful. Thank you for putting that in. The type of flying flying I do is fun, the type of 'off airport' flying you do looks fun too. But boy can things go wrong in a split second... horribly wrong.

Just got it today and watched it. Really enjoyable and lots of good information. Makes me wish I could get into those places that are difficult enough to deter the crowds. When I floated the Selway a month ago I couldn't believe how many people there were at both Shearer and Moose...felt like I was floating through the local fishing stretch instead of a wilderness area. But it was good to see others out enjoying the backcountry...except for the two not so good looking naked ladies and one naked guy, they were not so nice so see
