Big Rocks & Long Props V4 Alaskan Adventure

I have just finished my latest ski flying video. Last March/April I spent several weeks in the Wrangells with my experimental Maule a.k.a. Bushwacker. I had a custom set of Landis 3000 skis built. I tested them out on everything I could find and they worked great.

For those that have not seen Volume 3, I went to Alaska and learned about ski flying from someone who really knows, my friend Paul Claus, owner of Ultima Thule Lodge www.ultimathulelodge.com . He invited me up for some one-on- one training time. Paul has thousands of hours in Cubs, 185, Beaver and Turbine Otter. He is also a mountaineer and knows the Wrangell Mountains better then anyone else. He taught me a lot about ski flying and, in a very short time, I was flying his 160 hp Super cub around the local area. I had a great time and was excited about seeing what Bushwacker could do.

I made the trip up with Bushwacker (still on 35" ABW), I landed on an ice pan that Paul had marked out below the lodge. I had shipped my straight skis up to Paul and, within a few hours of arriving, I had my shiny new red skis on. It was not long after testing them out that I was off on my first adventure.
I made the video about the different things that I experienced while living and playing in a remote setting such as the Wrangells of Alaska. The DVD is 18 chapters long and around 120 minutes. If you would like to see a trailer from it go to www.bigrockslongprops.com

I have gotten to do a lot of great things with my flying and ski flying ranks at the very top of great things you can do with an airplane!

Well here is a first view report on BRLP Vol. 4 for you.

As a avid Sled Neck (Snowmobiler) and Airplane guy I have wondered about puting the two together for some time but the amount of snow we get here don't allow me to be proficient with a aircraft and Skis so that hasn't happened. After watching Greg, Paul, and the others in the video enjoying the snow with their planes I think it would be Great for sure!! Knowing the things that can happen on a sled in the snow it was very familiar the work and fun that can be had.

The Video was very well done, the camera work and scenery are yet again another notch above the previous 3 in the ongoing library Big Rocks Long Props Videos. Having had the privilege of spending some time with Paul, Donna Claus and their wonderful family at UTL I can hear the stories that Paul tells in the video like I am standing there with Greg and the rest laughing and waiting for the next one and looking forward to the next adventure as well. The only thing that I thought was bad about the the film was that it ended....

Greg,

Congrats on another well done Video that will for sure need a back up copy on my shelf just in case burn up another DVD player re-playing it over and over again.

PS-- If you call Greg looking for the Video and he don't have any  Give us a call at AK Bushwheel and we will be sure to get it to you ASAP!!!

I keep BRLP Idaho Backcountry on my iPhone and watch it when I have to fly commercial. I can always see the person seated next to me out of my peripheral vision, rubbernecked over watching it. They eventually ask why the hell that guy is doing that in that little plane. :)

I like the direction the productions are going because they're very insightful with Greg's commentary and what he is thinking about technique. A lot of videos are reluctant to do that for fear of being held liable for "instructing."

On the other hand it puts women (non-pilot women) to sleep...which may be a good thing.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Got mine ordered last night. Can hardly wait to see it. The teaser was awesome. I have to say that was the first time I seen someone land on water with skiis.

Keep the shiney side up and the dirty side down...

I really like this latest video and have to agree with the previous posts about the direction of Greg's videos. I like that Volumes 3 and 4 have more of plot/story than the extreme landings and take-offs of previous volumes. Don't get me wrong, I really like Volumes 1 & 2 as well, but I really like the variety in the new volumes (big terrain, cool airplanes, skiing, ice climbing, etc.) - fun to watch.

It's probably best to just buy them all. :D

Nice work Greg!
