Big Screw EZ tie down Review

Anybody have a field review on this tie down. I've read most of the old posts regarding tie downs and used an auger type (very labor intensive) tie down for my C210s for 35 yrs but now I'm getting old and lazy and need something for my Husky. This system appears to work better than most and a lot more convenient. Don't want to leave anything behind; aka duckbill. Not trying to re-invent the wheel; just looking for a field review.
Thanks

Re: Big Screw EZ tie down Review

Not sure what good a field review will do you unless the reviewer had a load cell and a tripod and winch and tested it in a variety of soils, and even then you really don’t know much. All the commercial tie downs work great with no wind, and they all suck with enough wind to pull them out. 100% success and 100% failure, depending on conditions

I can see that tie down working very well or terribly in the exact same location, depending on the angle of the rope. And I can see soil types where it would work excellently, and other soils where it would be absolutely useless.

Asking if it’s an adequate tie down is a bit like asking if a 170 is a adequate airplane...depends on the conditions and how the operator utilizes it.

There is no shortcut for carefully evaluating the wind potential and the consistency of the soil and building anchors to match both. No one system will work across all, or even most conditions.

I own a set, so I'm pretty sure that they're the very best out there ! :) Jk.. I've never had them in a big wind, so certainly can't vouch for them, and as Hammer states, every soil is going to be different, but looking at them, watching the videos, etc., did convince me to give them a try. I also bought a ratcheting "gear wrench" that fits in the bag with them, to speed up the process. Get 'em !!

Thanks Hman442; that is exactly what I was asking for: as an owner-your opinion. As dirt mover for 40 yrs; I've got a pretty good idea what soils are and do when stressed.

Re: Big Screw EZ tie down Review

The concern with variable soil conditions is the big one. My opinion is that the duck bills are the most adaptable to any soil condition. If you can get them in the ground (rocks, gravel) they’ll probably hold. if considering sand to be being the least secure, duck bills are probably the best option.

Sod or clay, anything should work. I’ve witnessed The Big Screws in that circumstance. They seemed fine. The Claw also works well in those conditions. I wouldn’t trust either in sand or loose gravel.

Pounding in stakes, and even worse, extracting them later, doesn’t seem compatible with the OP’s desired ease of use. I’ve seen a cordless impact used to install the Big Screws. Worked well in sod. It causes me to wonder if some structural screws sized similar to the spikes provided with The Claw would work as a suitable replacement to ease the install and extraction of that device.

Really, there all kinds of ideas out there competing for your accessory dollar. Choose what ever will allow you to sleep at night even while the wind howls, and maintain adequate insurance.

Re: Big Screw EZ tie down Review

I bought a Big Screw set 2 years ago at OSH, but I've never used them--I know it's heresy around here, but I haven't been any place since then that I needed any tie-downs, other than the straps! Incidentally, the Big Screw straps are very nice.

But I have used my The Claw tie-downs countless times, and so I know their limitations. I was hoping by getting the Big Screw set that I could fill in where The Claw is less than optimal. Not that it won't yet get used, but so far, no need for it. I did not get a separate wrench, just a socket that would fit, because I have a ratchet wrench in my airplane's tool kit.
