Big Tires. Again!

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Big Tires. Again!

Trying to find the "Options" list offered from Cessna for my 182. Don't see it in the TCDS.

Would like to put 8x6 mains and 6 or 7 x6 nose wheel on my 74 P model 182 with just a logbook entry, if possible.

Any ideas on where to look?\

Thanks.

Well, I think I just found out they stopped offering the upgrade about 200 units before mine was made. Looks like up thru serial #18260825 you could get the "heavy duty" fork and 600x6 nose wheel as an option.

Oh well, deep down I just knew it wasn't going to be that easy!

Re: Big Tires. Again!

The Landes (Airglas) nose fork STC will allow you to install up to 6.00 x 8.50's on your C-182. I installed this mod several years ago and have been running 6.00 x 8.00's for use in backcountry flying. One quirk of the Landes STC is that you have to run the same size tires on all three wheels. However, I recently received a field approval from the Seattle FSDO to run a 6.00 x 8.00 on the nose and 6.00 x 8.50's on the mains. My understanding is that this is a common field approval and is easy to obtain. It certainly was in my case. Let me know if you need further info.

Re: Big Tires. Again!

I have the Landis fork and you dont have to have the same size tires on all three. I have the STC from AK Bushwheels and have been ramped checked several times with the tires and mods on the plane.

29's on the mains and 10x6 on the nose. She flies like a dream!

Re: Big Tires. Again!

Aktahoe, what make tire on the front and where did you get it? I looked at your picture gallery and noticed the bent firewall. Can you shed some light on that. I am looking to set my 175 project up very similar to your setup ,and wish too draw on anybody elses experience with the big wheeled tricicle program. From the looks of it your firewall is bent in at the top - opposite of what i would expect if a large hole was hit. Thanks

Re: Big Tires. Again!

Hey Magnum-

You can read about the firewall in hotair I think...was an Idaho trip a couple summers back. Airplanes bend. Fly one long enough, it happens to everyone, so I keep being told. I now have a re-enforced firewall and a heavy duty rubber stopper on the bottom of the Oleo leg.

The tire is a goodyear 10x6 on the front with Landis fork. If I could ever figure out how to post photos here in my post I would. ( I know Zane...I have read the tutorial, I am just computer illiterate..:) )

Good luck

Re: Big Tires. Again!

If you read the Airglas/Landes STC, you'll see it expressly requires the same size tires all around. I spoke with Chris Donnelly at Airglas a few weeks ago about this very issue and he was lamenting the fact that he has yet to receive approval from the FAA to vary from this requirement under the current STC. I guessing he knows what his own STC says. Obviously, you have a different set-up, perhaps because you went through AK Bushwheels.

Wing Ext yep! Would be cool but I am already getting 41 GS over the threshold.

As for tires, with my Idaho experience, I can tell you in all honesty, I have had every fed this side of mexico look at my plane with the set up. All have said they like it. I have the 337 STC with every ounce of paperwork you can imagine for it. I have learned more about FAR's than I would like to even express. Every I and T is dotted and Crossed. This was a field approval.

AK Bushweel 29's, Landis Fork with Goodyear 10x6.

Jim at Hutt aviation in Minden helped out a lot as did some good people at Lake Hood in AK.

Its crazy that the Landis guys says he is having problems as I have lots of pic of various 182's in AK with my very same set up.

Anyhow, if you need the STC I can at least copy and send it you as to what it looks like.

Posted a bunch of pics from todays Nevada desert fly around here on my FB page and also posted the on the BCP FB page

...check em out! Going to Austin in the AM if its not blowing 50mph like they are predicting here tomorrow.

Re: Big Tires. Again!

My mechanic is very conservative but I didn't have any problem installing the Landis nose fork on my '58 C182 and then running the 8.50x6 on the nose and 8.50x10s on the mains. It was a very nice set up and complimented my Bush Stol kit. The secrete to not bending the firewall on the 182 is to ALWAYS land mains first. I am now flying a Husky, but have good feelings and memory of that 182.
