Black Hills Backcountry Fly-in Sep 13-15

Hi Everyone, I'm trying to get the word out about the 1st (possibly annual) black hills fly-in. We are planning to be based out of Hulett Wy (KW43) starting Friday evening on the 13th. We will be grilling burgers for the evening meal.
Saturday morning, breakfast will be hosted by the North Fork Buffalo Ranch, which is about a 15 minute flight from Hulett.
The rest of the morning will be flying to some different ranch strips/ cow pastures around the Little Missouri Buttes and then flying down the Belle Fourche river to Devils Tower.
Lunch will be at the Devils Tower KOA, So far we are planning to have everyone land right next to the tower within walking distance from the KOA. If there ends up being a problem with the park, we will be able to land within 3 miles and shuttle people back and fourth to the KOA.
Saturday afternoon, is still up in the air and will depend on what everyone wants to do, Perhaps a informal STOL competition, Flour bombing ect. Saturday evening supper will be at the Ponderosa restaurant in Hulett. Sunday, you are on your own. We are going to have transportation to and from the motels to the airport (about 2 miles). Also, the Hulett airport has a shower in the terminal so if you want to camp, that is an option.
As we get a little closer to September, I would like anyone who is planning to come to contact me and let me know they are coming so that we can plan for meals.
We would love to see some of you there! Clint (605) 891-1290

Curious--where exactly are you proposing to land near the Tower?

BTW, very familiar with the area--folks lived in Sundance for many years, and I used to land at Lee Schloredt's strip fairly frequently, several times a year. Of course, it's been closed for years, after he died. I've also tented at the KOA campground by the Tower, on a Tour de Wyoming bike tour several years ago.

Hi Cary, we will be landing directly east of the tower about 1 mile on Ogden Driskoll's ranch, At least that's the plan. Ogden is also a Wyoming State senator so he said if there was any problems with the park, he would make a few calls and "take care of it". Clint

There goes the National Welfare. All gone to hell in a hand basket, I suppose.

From the Billings Sectional; "For reasons of national welfare, pilots are requested to avoid flights within 3nm of Devils Tower National Monument."

I wish I had a picture of a certain interpretive plaque on the paved trail around the tower. It shows the Tower directly in the crosshairs of a huge Cessna poised to roll on a dangerous sortie from Hulett International. Captioned something to the effect of "Endangered Soundscapes" or some other National Park Sercus drivel.

One can only hope that there's some quaint remnant left of the National Welfare after you guys have had your fun.

Thanks for the info. My family (Wife and kids, 3 and 5) would like to come. Is it a camping event or are there hotels? Camping under the old 182 would be pretty cool.

The motels are:
Best Western (307) 467-5747
Hulett Motel (307) 467-5220
Pioneer Motel (307) 467-5656

Camping under the wing is possible as the terminal has a shower. Clint

Re: Black Hills Backcountry Fly-in Sep 13-15

HI Folks, I talked with one of the park rangers at Devils Tower and he is planning to be at the burger burn on Friday night to address everyone on what the "rules" are around Devils Tower. As far as I can tell, flying near the tower isn't forbidden, but is frowned upon. However, we will be landing on private land and thehttp://www.supercub.org/forum/attach ... 1374973379 ranger was OK with that so I think we are all set!!!

Re: Black Hills Backcountry Fly-in Sep 13-15

Anybody up for some climbing? I can furnish a lead, ropes, gear, and knowledge of the approaches and climbs. Any takers would have to show up with shoes and harness. I'd need someone to clean gear and/or swing leads.

I have not been climbing much of late, so I'm honestly only up to leading simple stuff. (I'm not fat, just haven't been on the rock.) If someone else wants to lead one of the 5.8's or 9's, I can follow. That's about all I'm good for, these days.

FWIW.

HI Mepps1 perhaps you could climb up there and clear some of the big rocks off the tower and then we the rest of us could land up there!!!!

You could land there now, with the right breeze. I'll film it for you.

We'll call the release Close Encounters of the Cub Kind. Then we'll call your attorney. If you got a good one, he could probably score you one of the better rooms at Gitmo. Proceeds from the film could probably almost cover attorney fees from your bond hearing.
