Back when I was a kid working on the farm we were disking with a 485 and broke the disk. That night a heavy rainstorm came through and flooded the field where the 485 was parked. The next day the welder cam out to fix the disk but when he tried to move it the 485 just sank deeper. Decided it was stuck when water started coming in the cab  It was quite a chore to get that thing unstuck...the wheels were completely buried in the mud.

Don't see too many of those 485s around here anymore. The farmer I worked for switched over to JD 8400T series tractors.

Re: Building a runway!

Whee, the 485 has been good to us, but just can't compete with the power and awesomeness of these new JDs. This thing has a subwoofer in it for crying out loud!
Got some rolling done today. Had to go around a few soft spots, but theres plenty of room for me to do touch and goes and land in the strip now. No bigger planes yet!

Some green paint for gb and all of us other JD junkies

A picture from low down to give an idea of the profile. Fairly flat with a slight rise to the west.

Re: Building a runway!

I see some crown on there. Very good. If you need more crown, you could grab some from a long swale from the field.

Dont want to put a swale along the field. Its not our field, and the water runs south from the strip onto the field as is. I also want very little crown. Im going to make a small swale along the trees, mostly just to catch the water thats frim the snow melting out of the brush piles. This will allow the wet spots to dry up and get it finished quicker.

Re: Building a runway!

From the air, it looks like the strip is too close to the trees. But I see from the parked plane that there's actually lot's of room.

Coming along nicely 8)

It does seem tight on final, but with 75' it gives lots of room. You can also hang the wing over the field to the south(high wings only!)
Thanks, it is coming along. Couole more days it should be pretty much ready for seed.

Re: Building a runway!

Nice. You are lucky to have a spot for a strip. If my old man would have been around a piece like that we'd have been planting it before the smoke cleared from the stump fire. :D

Haha. Well I wouldve loved to have it planted as well, but the 10000 acres I get paid to farm take precedence.

Re: Building a runway!

When I looked at the first set of pictures I thought you might be developing a runway with a "snowcrete" surface. I was glad to read that was not the long term plan. It's fun to read about a project like this that I'll never experience directly. It gives me a greater appreciation for the nice sod runways I get to land on. Keep up the progress reports.

Re: Building a runway!

So got some more work done. Dug the ditch along the north edge, bladed it up, installed half of my culvert, and disked it. It is now ready for seed.

Re: Building a runway!

It is really shaping up, will really be fun when it gets green. Going back to the July 3rd post/picture, it looks like your new culvert will be running water to the south/east in an unplanted spot, out of curiosity, is that a permanent wet area? looks kind of white in the picture.

Hey Steve. The ditch does run to the south. The low spot is actually the trees and north of the trees is a dug out. The water runs to the south into the field now that we ha e a ditch. Before it spread out onto the yard, and we plan on building a large shop there next summer. The white lookig area is actually an old oil lease. Not much there anymore, but enough that it can't be farmed through.

Re: Building a runway!

Well strip is seeded and growing lots of grass. Landed and taken off lots and its working great.

Image
Seeding the strip with the help of my trusty pup Torque.
After I seeded it, which was a lot of walking with a hand seeder, I rolled the strip with only one roller, but had it right full of water. The finish is quite nice. A bit rough but the fescue should fill that in. I have a couple sticks to pick off of it. Will post a video landing on it in a bit. Also more pics to come.

Re: Building a runway, need naming recommendations.

Now that the strip is done, I am looking to this community for recommendations on a name. Was gonna do Peoria International, but turns out there is one of those already. Close towns are Peoria and Eaglesham. Looking for something fun and interesting to go on the Sectional and in the CFS.
Thanks in advance
