Buying a new 1969 Maule

Help, all you Maule guys. I know two guys that are wanting a plane. They have looked at 172,175,182 types. They have found a 1969 M-4 Maule in Ca that has 1,000 T.T. Somewhere around 50 since a top. Never been recovered, I think it's Razorback. Guy wants $46,000. What's your tkae on this bird?
Thanks, Ron

I'm not qualified to call myself a "Maule guy", but I have one. Just for comparison, I bought mine in Jan with a fresh engine (210hp) and new prop for less than this guy is asking for his. Mine is a '73 model and has original razorback that is in really good shape (according to "fabric guys"). I guess that stuff holds up well if hangared. I love it...traded my 182B for it. No regrets.

$46k will go a long ways in todays market. Should be able to buy something that won't require major $$$ input in the near future. Remember, my opinion is worth exactly what it costs, though.

This one is the immediate older sibling of mine. One digit earlier on the serial number.

Not sure if this is the one your looking at because you mentioned a different year, but if it is, I know Dennie, and have seen the plane a few times. In fact, I was pretty close to buying it myself if my 140 hadn't needed an engine overhaul #-o

Im no maule expert, but it's definitely a nice looking plane, clean, and well taken care of. I talked with him at length about the plane before he knew i was interested in buying it so he didnt sugar coat anything, but i got the impression he wouldnt sugar coat for a potential buyer either, a pretty stand-up guy. I saw his first ad on B-stormers and was more detailed about things he has done. Tell your buddies dont hesitate to call and ask him and ask about it, and don't hesitate to negotiate

BTW, not trying to help a buddy sell his plane just cause he's a friend, I don't know him that well...I just think it a nice plane

Re: Buying a new 1969 Maule

the blue one in the ad is a M4 but it's a franklin 220 HP not a 210 continental...the franklins had the big air scoop on the bottom of the cowling while the continentals like mine have no air scoop...must be a different Maule on barnstormers...the ad says M4 210...

Re: Buying a new 1969 Maule

Hey Ron,
The older M-4s didn't have sealed wing struts, and require a heinous AD at annual time. This devalues the airplane. With 1000 hours on a IO-360 and a 1500 hour TBO this devalues the airplane too. It might however be a real good airplane besides these issues. Offer the guy 38K and walk away. He will problably call you back. Good luck.

James

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

Re: Buying a new 1969 Maule

most M4's have had the wing struts replaced with sealed ones... Mine has and When I did it Maule said most were done by the owners. Same problem for Piper PA 22's but I had done to mine too. ASk the seller if it's been done.. otherwise I don't know the cost now as I did mine about 7 years ago..If not it requires punch testing the struts at annual which is a pain. but doable...

Sounds like a realistic price for an M4-145, not a 210.

Re: Buying a new 1969 Maule

I thought it should defineately be worth more. But, I thought the same about the 182  That is just what the ins. co. told me. I was considering buying it, and wanted to insure it for $50K. I'm a believer in ins. , NOW  Funny, he is going to an early 182.
