C-210 belly (nosewheel only) landing in Florence, OR

Nice emergency landing by this pilot, landing a 210 with the main gear stuck. Final approach is at about 3:08. Unsure why no flaps were used.

Nice work by the pilot.

I can hear his ol lady in the walk back to the ramp........." You are never flying again!!!"

Question:
What year did the 210 go strut-less?

How much would an older 210 liek that cost to get back up in the air in the best of circumstances if all three wheels stayed up?

Been there done that - have parts and expenence to get it going . Is 210 for sale ? Appears to be 1960 model hydraulic flaps and gear . No porp strike that I saw in video . More than "up gear lock " not releasing . very fixable at mimumun cost .

Nice job by the pilot. There is a reason for down and welded, though, right?

Hey, I know that guy! I'll have to give him a call. He put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into that old girl, then learned to fly in it.

Re: C-210 belly (nosewheel only) landing in Florence, OR

Just guessing here but I think that the Bonanza leads the pack in gear ups due to head up the ass syndrome, but the 210 must lead the pack by double digits in the gear ups with a mechanical malfunction at the root of it all. Isn't there an STC for taking the gear doors off of those?

The last year for struts on a 210 was 1966.

Gotta love the Cessna gear. That's why "new" airplane in 2014 is gonna be an E model Mooney with Johnson Bar.

Just anecdotal, but I read the FAA Preliminary Accident and Incident Reports every day. Have for years.

Two observations:

1. There are a disproportionate number of accidents involving Mooneys.

2. If it is a Mooney, 90% of the time it was a gear up landing (or the closely related "gear collapse" landing).

I've read the same stats, and I just don't get it.

I've got probably 400 to 500 hours in Mooneys, mostly E models, and less in F's, and love flying them. But I don't understand how guys gear 'em up. You can't get anywhere near approach or landing speeds unless the gear's down. They're just too slippery. You'd have to be really oblivious, or really distracted to screw up that bad.

I've gotta agree. My Mooney time has been mostly in and out of the SF bay area back in the good old days when there was a lot of traffic around. If you don't get the gear down early you're going to run over people. There just isn't any other way to slow it down. The Mooney armstrong gear is the only GA retract system with no emergency gear down mechanism. I love 'em.

Re: C-210 belly (nosewheel only) landing in Florence, OR

Not to continue the thread hijack, but:
I took my commercial check ride in a Mooney 20F with the Johnson bar gear lever.
During the oral portion, the examiner asked me what I would do if the gear did not come down with the usual procedure, my honest reply:
"pull harder"!
