C185 w MT Prop wins Valdez Heavy Touring Class STOL

Congratulations to Rudi VonImoff of Anchorage on his win in the 2013 Valdez STOL contest - Heavy Touring Category. Rudy used his Cessna 185 with a -550 engine conversion and our high performance composite MT Propeller to pull this off. Rudi was one of the very first pilots in Alaska to install the MT prop when our STC was approved nearly 10 years ago. We thank Rudi for starting the trend and sparking desire for MT composite props in Alaska and offer our congratulations for the win.

I am amazed almost daily with my MT! The extra $4k is very much worth every penny. Not to mention how well it's holding up.

Re: C185 w MT Prop wins Valdez Heavy Touring Class STOL

Up at the Trade Show McCauley (owned by Cessna) had a Composite propeller (containing no wood) that I believe is targeting the Cirrus/Corvalis Fleet.
Shouldn't be long before someone STC's it for the 520/550 Skywagons.
Nothing like competition to bring down the prices :)

Rob,
Rudy's T/O was 153 with 226 on the landing
Sportsman, wing X, 550.

After trailering his plane down to the desert to practice all winter long, Franks slatted J3 took the Exp with 58/54 . Great to see the blood sweat and tears pay off ! =D>

I can beat that....just saying... Well, I can beat that landing for certain. Nervino's small strip is 330' at 5000'. Land there almost every day and not even close to the end. Sure wish I was there this year. Weather was perfect!

Those are very good numbers!

Re: C185 w MT Prop wins Valdez Heavy Touring Class STOL

Kevin,

The problem is at Valdez you don't get to choose what the wind or weather is going to do, or whether you'll take it or not. I have witnessed Franks little J3 to stop and goes in under 40' at much higher DA's than what they had last weekend, In fact I have witnessed him do sequential stop and goes across my ag strip in just a light breeze  , but in the end he still made good with the conditions that he was dealt =D>

Take care, Rob

Not to mention, manufactured domestically. I believe the MT props are made in Germany and imported. Nothing wrong with precision german handiwork, but there are costs associated and the value of the dollar weighs in.

Of course, I'd expect the initial price point to match Flight Resource MT's. :D

Re: C185 w MT Prop wins Valdez Heavy Touring Class STOL

At the contest don't you have to land past a line as close to the line as possible and the measurement goes from there to where you stop? That would be a longer number than if you could just set it down wherever you hit and measure there to stop.
What where the conditions there this year? I'm not sayin I could beat the 185 but I sure feel like I could... :? Fairly confident stripped like they are (low fuel, one seat in,just took a dump, :P etc) that I could be off in less than 100ft and stop in less than that.. And im no wizard. So what's the scoop?? Never been. No nothing more than YouTube videos and campfire talk about Valdez.

The penalty for landing short of the line is 1000'
Two tries T/O and land, shortest combined number (in the same attempt) is your number
The best stock cub (bush class, which includes huskies) was Bobby Breeden with 151' score.
That is pretty impressive when you consider some of the folks he was up against. Kirk Ellis comes to mind...It is very easy to imagine beating these guys numbers, but doing it is a whole different deal, ya gotta remember that once their turn is up, they're flying ...
It's not like they can wait for the ideal day or time... I say hats off to all of them!

And taking pics any sooner in the day would require me to get up too early

Haha. Rob. Hell your just goin to work now.

And that's what I meant. You have to spot land. So a 200 ft landing may really only be a 150ft ground roll.
I was really just trying to be a cocky sum bitch that thinks he can fly better than anyone at Valdez is what I was really saying. I'm a real badass. Hahaha.

Disclaimer: this was intended as a joke and nothing more. I am not a badass and recommend no one listen to anything I say. Ever.

55wagon I've seen you spot land and I'd put money on you. But, the Valdez folks are landing on tarmac (or whatever) and that has to enter into it I'd think. It certainly would for me. I'll stand hard on the binders on grass or off airport, I'm just a bit (okay a lot) more cautious when forced to land on the hard stuff. That is certainly where a very tricked out trike would have an advantage. Okay, I'll have to excuse myself now so I can go wash my mouth out with soap.

Notes From Near Valdez

As I saw it:

Some of those trikes literally smoke the tires. Once touched down in a trike you can really get on the binders, squealing, smoking and all. A first hand, subjective acount: the air seemed dead and spotty. I landed well over my average. The young Breedan won the bush class for a second year, and he proved and earned it. A foot note, since someone mentioned the likes of Kirk ellis, might be that Kirk was flying the Hulk, a four person super cub --a beast of a plane, a little more to it than a standard cub. Rudi certainly looked impressive, and any day you make a better showing than Paul Claus you have to be doing everything right.
