Cabela's

Went to the new Cabela's store in Lacey WA today. They opened last week. No grass strip there at the store , not yet anyway, so I drove. Besides looking at all the new guns I couldn't afford, they had a pretty good selection of "pre-owned" muskets (which I couldn't afford either). Ya see less & less used guns displayed nowadays, and almost never at a chain store-- but then again Cabela's isn't your average chain store. Didn't really look at any other retail goods, but I did enjoy checking out the many full-body mounts they had of game animals, displayed diorama-style like a natural history museum. To top things off, they had a J3 hanging from the overhead, complete with a set of Alaska Bushwheels. Too cool! BTW, I checked the tailnumber when I got home, it's a 1946 J3 registered in 2006 to a guy in Livingston New York. Hope he doesn't think it's in his hangar!

I recently found the new Cabalas outside of Reno...I was in a spending mood so I wisely chose not to stop. I'm not sure how I feel about these mega-stores...strikes me as Walmart for rednecks. I have fond memories of small outdoor shops which never had exactly what you needed but charged too much for what they did have. It was a great lesson in making do with what you had available, and taking great care of what you owned.

I've been to a couple of Cabelas stores, and the dangling Cub first struck me as kinda cool. Then... kinda sad. Here was this airplane hanging inside a building never to fly again. Ah, well. I guess they can do what they want with their own airplane... but I'd sure love to have that choice.
I like Cabela's. They were the only store I could find, for a while, that carried my 7.5 x 55 ammo, though fortunately I can get it at Gander Mountain here at home now, and Wolf is making it relatively inexpensively (gotta start reloading though).

I've always figured that discipline is more in the mind than in overpriced, understocked outdoors stores.

Well they are nice to browse though. I still perfer the straight gun shop to do my firearms dealings with. Oh and less it's something special, I'll try and find it yard sale or private party.

Robert "Bub" Wright, aka Skylane, passed away in November of 2011. He was a beloved community member and will be missed.

Take it from a guy that used to be in manufacturing, All the mart's starting with the Great Wal to Cabela's to BP have buying offices and manufacturing plants well established in CHINA. Wonder why the two currencies are pegged.

They all start with buying an american made product and then take it over to China and knock it off, then say FO to the small guy in the US.

It used to piss me off to no ends to see American and those not so legal spending all their hard earned cash at THE GREAT WALL of CHINA then wonder why they are unemployed and then blame the government.

Now that I am out of manufacturing and have enough to survive, I just don't give a crap. New mato, Support China Let China Buy Us.

Thank you GW.

The China thing started with Clinton around 1994 or so. He sold trade secrets (or gave to China)

John,
Clinton was good for one thing, he taught us all you can stay out of jail if you can remember three simple phrases

1. I didn't Inhale

2. I didn't have sex with that woman

3. I don't recall

I think I've used several combinations of all three a time or two over the years!!!!!

Adultery and lying...two American traditions. Clinton's biggest phuckup was that he didn't just admit he was banging an ugly woman in the oval office and tell everyone to get stuffed. I think he deserves credit for the entertainment he brought the American people.

It also provided a nifty smokescreen for all the brush fires he was playing with, as well as the swarm of cruise missiles that the left so conveniently forgot about... until their sworn enemy took office... then they suddenly remembered their 'anti-war' stance.

Screw 'em all, right and left. I haven't seen an honest one yet.

Hammer,

I love it, If you don't mind, I'm going to use your quote. Maybe you should even pass it on (sell it) to Jeff Foxworth!

Regardless of whether you agree with Cabela's (and other megastores') geopolitical stance, they're worth a visit. I can guarantee that you'll never see a wildlife display like theirs at any other retail establishment, or anywhere short of a museum setting. I remember going into the original Weatherby's store in South Gate California years ago, they had some mounts including a full size polar bear, all of which were shot by Roy ("High-velocity...I'll Show You High-Velocity") Weatherby himself. Didn't even compare. Don't think you're gonna see too many Cubs hanging in other stores either. I like the old=fashioned mom and pop type gun stores too, but they're getting few and far between. Good ones, that is...

Forgive my ignorance, but who is Jeff Foxworthy? I don't have a TV, if that explains anything...

"Redneck 12 Days of Xmas", "You just might be a redneck if...", etc. Stand-up comedian, had a TV sitcom series a couple years ago, which fizzled I guess. He's still pretty funny though.
Samples: You just might be a redneck, if going to the bathroom in the middle of the night involves shoes & a flashlight .....if directions to your house include "when you turn off the paved road" ........ if you discover an abandoned car when you mow your yard.....

If yer front porch collapses and kills more than six dogs, you might be a redneck.

If your Mama doesn't bother to spit out her Beech Nut before tellin' the state trooper to kiss her ass, you might be a redneck...

If I remember aright at least a few of the Cubs hanging from the ceilings are cobbled together as displays from unairworthy parts. The one referenced above though doesn't sound like that's the case - okay, then that's sad. :(

But Cabela's is an airplane centric crowd (they created a Super Cub duffle of all things) and they may very well put in a grass strip at the store if you bug 'em enough about it. The one in Owatonna. MN is just down the street from the airport and they run a bus for the people flying in. I used to do it all the time back when I lived in the Twin Cities. You could walk but if your arms are full of stuff it's easier to ride the shuttle.

The Super Cub Duffel fits perfectly in the storage space of a Super Cub airplane. We designed this duffel to give you enough room to hold a ton of gear, yet still fit into smaller, cramped spaces. It makes a great bag anytime more height and less length is needed. Like the standard duffels, it's equipped with internal compression straps to secure your gear when the bag isn't full. Capacity 7,040 cu. in. Size: 16"W x 22"L x 20"H.
