Calhan CO to Sheridan WY and back

My buddy lives on a historic ranch in Wolf, WY outside of Sheridan. He caught a ride down with another friend to see some people down my way in CO (he came from here originally). I was planning to fly up and see him for his birthday a few weeks ago, but it worked out this way, so I flew him home and stayed up there for the weekend. This is the second time I've made this trip.

Ended up with a tailwind the majority of the flight up and back, so that was lucky/strange  Wind was better this time which is surprising being Spring. It was gusting 28 at Douglas today where I refueled on the way back, mostly down the runway so landing wasn't too big of a deal but taxing and getting fuel is always stressful in those conditions. I was having visions of my bird flying away without me while trying to quickly squeeze out some pee and pay for fuel.

When I left I would bet my take off roll was 100ft even at ~1100 pounds. Pattern altitude half way down the runway is always neat :D And also helpful as my zoomie header setup is so loud I pretty much have to pull the power back to make audible transmissions on the radio

I was thankful to have the zipper, as we were really heavy going up to Sheridan (of course, I'm sure we were not a single ounce over gross weight ;) ). It was interesting to check fuel burns on some longer flights than I usually do, and a lot heavier too. Going up heavy, I averaged 4.25 gph at 110mph indicated. Coming home a little lighter I was working in the 3.75-3.85gph area again at 110mph indicated. I'm pitched pretty finely, so that is ~5500rpms / 18-19" manifold pressure depending on weight etc. And leaned out a fair bit on the hacman (air fuel ratios were pretty lean, but cruising at 8500-10,000 ft my egts ranged from 1450 at the very hottest I saw, and sometimes sustained as low as 1330-1350 at high altitude (talking leanest cylinders on all those numbers)).

I'm including some pictures of the ranch he lives/works on. It's a beautiful place nestled right up against the Bighorn mountains. They have guest cabins, full kitchen + food provided during the season they are open, horseback riding etc. It's called Eatons Ranch and it's got a ton of neat History that he knows a lot of. I heard some good stories over the weekend. They are closed right now, but things get pretty lively/fun/wild around there in the summer!

These trips are never long enough, I was only there 2 nights and had to go back to the real world where I have cell service, and a job and all that kind of stuff :-| Great excuse to get out the s6s and stretch its legs though as I haven't ventured far from the bird cage in some time

Pictures aren't great, as I forgot SLR...

Cool place across the river from the cabins (river just out of site on the right) Where they do weddings, out door lunches, parties etc.

Nice trip report. There's a young gal from here that married into the Wagonhound Ranch south of Douglas. Guess it's quite the place too.

If it was taken on the way back, your first "some lake" pic looks like Glendo Reservoir southeast of Douglas.

As many times as I've flown to or past Sheridan going south, I can only think of a couple of times I wasn't beat to death by turbulence for the first hour out of Sheridan. The Big Horns can really stir up the wind!

After spending just a little time in WY on a couple occasions, I have come to realize there are some pretty serious ranches up there   I mean that really isn't a surprise to anyone I'm sure, after all, it's Wyoming... but when you hear some of the history and stories about some of these places it's really pretty interesting.

I've only done that treck twice, but I have to agree. Even when the wind on the ground is calm in Sheridan, it seems to be pretty wild between buffalo and Colorado  The last time I did this trip, I really got my teeth kicked in. The kind of turbulence where for 2 hours at a time I couldn't get enough of a break to take a sip of water without wearing whatever came out of the bottle. Was thankful today wasn't that severe.

Re: Calhan CO to Sheridan WY and back

I was up for an hour or so Sunday and the exact thought I had on return was "...glad I am not up in WY today...".

Great report. :)

Greg, did you do a touch-n-go at LMO on Sunday late-AM-early-afternoon-ish? I caught a glimpse of a cool 180 with a distinct paint color...

I don't think you're giving your airplane enough credit!

105 indicated at 9500' is 120-125 true depending on temp. I'd say your airplane is faster than you think..

By my quick math, that's ~30 mpg through the air - pretty impressive.

That's a good point! I'm used to flying at those altitude so I never really thought about it much.

Yea I think your right, when you don't have wind fighting you it should do a little over 30mpg.

Yup. Made a big circle from bdu to platte valley to easton to greeley to fortlove to lmo and back to bdu. It was quite "sporty" up at greely with 30kt gusts gusting from 280. Perfect x-wind experience so we took rwy 35 for the 90 deg. xwind - but I was a bit gripped. This plane is a LOT bigger than my J3.

I got a great hangar up at LMO so I'll be moving up there soon. A hangar - with electricity, and heat, and get this.... a shitter! Movin' on up weezy!

Look for the "teal tortuga" or the "jade juliet" or the "monster mallard" right next to the FBO there.

I thought that was you!

I look forward to seeing you up at LMO. You are excited about just electricity & heat!? I went so far as to build a small deck (complete with patio furniture) and have a TV, couch, and fridge ready for the hangar flying season. :)

I love the names. I'll keep an eye out for the Teal Tortuga!
