Camera Recommendation?

OK- I have been drooling over some of the great photo's BCP'ers have been posting and have read the latest photo thread on this site and am getting close to a decision on a camera purchase. I guess it is time to stop taking photo's with my cell phone and get serious.
My requirements and needs (wants) are as follows;

1.) Compact, lightweight and durable for hunting/flying trips.
2.) Easy to use, but maybe one step up from point and shoot.
3.) I don't want to buy something and grow out of it in 6 months.

I have been looking at a Canon G16.

Comments and recommendations??

@DBI

I think the Canon G16 would be an excellent choice. Another would be the Panasonic LX100. The LX100 has an advantage of having a substantially larger actual sensor which, like engine torque and horsepower, is generally a good thing :D

Just this past Thursday Zane was kind enough to actually establish a new catch all GROUP category named "other" . It is so brand new ( 2 days ago) that I have not placed any content on it yet . Consider having a look later next week for some discussion pieces on this very topic that I have been developing.
The new Group is called.

BCP Photography and Videography

https://www.backcountrypilot.org/me/my- ... ideography

Here is the description:
The purpose of this group is to bring together experts and non experts alike who have in common a love for Back Country Flying and also share an interest in documenting their aerial adventures either with digital still or video cameras.

Oh yeah, you Leica M4 and Argus C3 guys are also welcome. In fact everyone is welcome. Not only will most folks hopefully learn to elevate their photography skills a notch, but also be able to contribute increasingly higher quality visual content to this already wonderful website.

There are a lot of things I don’t know. In addition there are a lot of things I don’t know I don’t know. Unknowns unknowns or UNK UNKS are not limited to aviation. I have been absolutely stunned by many of the fabulous images people have posted in the forums. My reaction is usually..wow…that’s beautiful…how did they do that ..?? Well, hopefully this group will provide a common forum for people to share and share alike.

You know not only are some of the images absolute stunners, many of the videos are just as awe inspiring. My reaction is ..hmmm which GoPro did they use ? Oh, did they use that new Garmin VIRB instead ? Wow. .. How did they edit that fabulous video, inserting such clear pilot voices and totally cool music ? Wish I could so that.

There are so many topics that can be discussed from latest small digital still cameras, what kinds of flying environments favor what kinds of cameras and techniques, video/audio editing, multi video camera integration for flight videos, etc. The list is endless. It is January 2015, and hopefully throughout the year, this Group will become active discussing what is surely a topic that is of interest to us all.

Re: Camera Recommendation?

Like I said in the other thread, I had a Canon G11 which I believe is an older version of the G16. I did not like it. Like I explained, I thought it was slow in all respects. And, although it has the manual style controls, it always seemed to be trying to out think me. I found it frustrating.

I looked at the G16 with my mom because she wanted a camera similar to what it sounds like you want - although she does not hunt. I was not impressed with the G16. In the store it is hard to imaging how it will be in real life but, I really did't like the viewfinder. Maybe you wont be using it much but it really bothered be.

My mom ended up getting the Fujifilm X20. She seems happy with it but, honestly, all these cameras are a bit too confusing for her. She's in her mid eighties and the analog style controls combined with the menus are a bit overwhelming for her.

If you want to step up a bit, you could go mirrorless. They are a bit bigger and you can get interchangeable lenses. But they cost a bit more. But you can have more control. There is a great video on B & H that explains the category, and goes over a range of options at different price points. You can watch it here in the B & H Event Space. Click Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TU3XAHFJuY8&list=PLA2A7966A44E77011&index=42

I find the B & H Event Space lectures to be a great way to learn. There is a wealth of information there. They are great on rainy days when your sick in bed. Additionally, I have purchased from B & H online. I was impressed. I had the opportunity to visit their store once while in NY. Wow! What a place. Check it out if you are ever there.

TF- That is a great link- Thanks!

Alex- Great honest comments on the G16 and I took them very seriously.

I have elected to move away from my initial idea of a G16 based on Alex's comments and the review link above. A camera seems to me to be kind of like a concealed weapon. It is cool to talk about carrying a big ass gun, but in most cases it ends up staying at home because it is to freakin heavy! Since I want this camera to be in my pack when hunting size/weight was a huge factor. The G16 was 12+ oz that seemed a bit heavy.

I have really decided on two cameras..... (OMG stop the madness). I ordered the Canon S110 based on the info from the link above for $214 including shipping, an extra 32Gb card and carrying case!! The whole rig weighs in at 6.98 oz. Seems a bit more manageable.

My second caliber (I mean camera) looks like it will be the Fujifilm X100T. It weighs in at 15.7 oz and costs $1300 so it will definitely have a different mission statement. I will need to save up my pennies for that one and might order it before the summer after I play with my Canon S110 a bit.

Thanks for the help :D

Great Choice.. The newer S120 really drove the price down of the S110. As I said in an earlier post, I carry my ancient SD880 with me every day everywhere. The big stuff seems to stay in my camera closet. You know, just about all modern cameras produce an image that, with proper operator technique, results in a fairly decent image.

Truth be told, that sub compact line of Canon S95/S100/S110/S120 cameras has somewhat of a cult following. It is an amazing machine. I am going to wait for the S120 to drop a tad more, and then I might just join you as a fellow S110/S120 series owner. Congrats on a great camera buy. Seems like cameras are like guns and planes...I like them all :D

Just saw a write-up on Engadget the other day on some new Canon premium P&S compacts coming out this spring. Might be worth checking out.
