Well, for summer camping and flying I like Memaloose. It's a rather rough grass/weeds strip at 6800' on the edge of the Snake River Canyon. There are picnic tables right off the runway next to the forest service shack. Drinking water is available from a spring a short walk away. Supplies can be picked up at Joseph or Enterprise some 30 miles away, both have paved runways.
Another good place is Lakeside State on the south central coast. You can pitch a tent on the grass. It's a short walk to town for groceries or whatever. There's an out house at the strip. The Oregon Dunes are just on the other side of the Highway. Fishing close by on Tenmile Lake.
For Central Oregon I might suggest the Fort Rock BLM strip. Paved but not used except by us PPC fliers. You can camp right there. Water is usually available at the BLM outpost across the road. Close to Derrick Cave, Fort Rock, Hole in the Ground, Christmas Valley Sand Dunes.
Next weekend from the 24th to the 27th we'll have about 30 PPC folks camped at Beasley Lake (dry) near Fort Rock. It's large enough for you to land. Then we'll be heading over to Fort Rock BLM or Alkali Lake State for a few days, then over to Peters Dry Lake.
Alkali Lake State gets pretty hot but it's a huge gravel strip in the desert and you can camp there. No one uses it and the country around there is quite interesting. No water available though.
Like someone else said, Pelican Point on the Owyhee Res is a great place. Very nice scenery and no roads in. Gets really hot there in the summer though but you can always go swimming.
