Can I keep my small N number after a new paint job?

Curious if anyone knows the answer to this?

After a new paint job do you have to put on large N numbers or can you keep your small numbers due to the 30 years or older rule?

If your aircraft is 30 years old or older, you will be legal with 2" numbers. I researched it extensively before I took the 12"ers off of my plane.
Flying in a ADIZ might be a different story.......that's why they make electrical tape.
