Can you survive without floats in Ketchikan ?
Not necessarily information about airstrips or airports, but more general info about a greater area or a route of flight.
Can anyone from this region give me some idea of southeast Alaska non float plane flying prospects? I recently applied for a job with the State of Alaska in Ketchikan. I have a 172 K model tail wheel conversion with a STOL kit. I was wondering where people tiedown/hangar their non float planes and whether there are any outlying airports or landing strips that make having wheels an option and a wheeled airplane feasible.

Welcome to SE. I am a little N of you, but not much.
Not sure the hangar situation in KTN but there's plenty of tie downs. Lots of rain, and the KTN airport is sitting in the bottom of a wind funnel.
I haven't been down around that area a whole lot. I know it's pretty rocky. I have no doubt there are some workable beaches and gravel bars if you seek them out. Drop a PM to captainchaos, he's a air taxi pilot down that way. Good dude.

Got stuck in Ketchikan a couple of years ago for 4 days because of weather heading south. Big storm was coming in so I decided to hunker down for a while. Pretty good wind for next couple of days.The next to last day FSS was getting winds in the tower low 90's!! the awos was not as high though. (position on the airport I guess) I had tied my plane down double roped and every knot I could get in the length of rope! Intended on riding the ferry over to check on the plane but no luck. They closed the ferry!

I was sitting in the motel on the 4th story for most of the days. Wind was rocking the whole building! I was hoping the window held up. The next day the wind let up and I was able to get over to the plane. I got a ride to the tie down area from the guy at the FBO. He said that my plane had moved and I had better check it out really good before I flew it! I'm thinking Crap!!!! We drive down the hill and he pulls up to a Lake Amphib. and started to explain how they had to re tie it because it had turned 90 degrees and rolled back. I said thanks but my plane is the 205 still tied down about 1/2 way down the row.

Got lucky on that one!

Keep the Greasy side down!
Lots of guys fly wheels in the area. Get a float coat or pop out suspender life jacket. Portable EPIRB and lunch. Have some fun. On the clear day, it is real pretty. 13 ft of rain some years.

Flying is dangerous. If you think otherwise, you are new at this sport. Mind the gravity not the gap.
Thanks for the replies. I only applied for a job there so there is no firm plan to relocate. However, It's nice to know that you can get around on wheels when the visibility and ceilings are conducive to traveling by air.
The job and location are both a match for me. My wife and family are on board with the idea too.
