Canada Crossing going to Alaska

Any guys from Canada or the states hear any rumors about border crossing? I know they are closed till 4/21 but was wondering if anyone had heard any rumors of continued closing or date the boarders may open up. My father son and I are planning a trip flying up the Alaskan highway rout to Canada for 3 weeks at the end of July and are a little nervous about the Covid closure of boarder closings. Any news would be helpful as well as any specific resource that is relaying that information.

I try to keep the "Canada" page current with any border information in the news or which I thankfully receive from folks.

If you need a place to stay and camp I have a grass trip not far off the route. Much cheaper fuel then YQU and probably more friendly as well.

Re: Canada Crossing going to Alaska

From everything I read and hear, it is unlikely the Canada border will be open before fall at the earliest, because unlike the US, Canada is way behind the curve in vaccinating our own. Some of the polls I have read, say 90% of Canadian citizens (voters) do not want the border open until most are vaccinated. Unless it can be proven that vaccinated people cannot transmit the virus, I don't look for much hope with the border situation until then.

Re: Canada Crossing going to Alaska

As Steve has stated, Canada's vaccine roll-out has, so far, been a dismal failure. Our case counts are going up, not down, so I would imagine that many US citizens will be reluctant to venture north of the border until the fall at least.

This is very bad news for the tourism sector. Many fishing lodges in this country barely managed to survive last year's border closure and it will be the end of many if they have to endure another summer of the same.

I count myself lucky to be one of only 17,000 Canadians who have been fully vaccinated.

Re: Canada Crossing going to Alaska

I haven’t researched, but I expect American pilots will be free to transit through Canada to Alaska. I don’t think we can legally stop you. There are agreements in place.

You should expect to be asked to comply with local health directives. Masks, maintain physical distancing, only access food and lodging with as little contact with locals as possible, including takeout dining. Use the most direct route, and spend as little time in Canada as possible. No being a tourist along the way.

Realistically, infection rates vary in both countries. I don’t see why we are restricting border crossing. If you’re coming from an area with the same or equal rates of infection as where I live, how are you a higher risk to me than my neighbours?

I agree with Pinecone. I don't have an issue with US pilots flying through, and I am pretty sure they arent stopping them at the border.

I just called the nearest Canada Customs to me (Ft Frances) and asked them how they were handling the crossing situation of US aircraft transiting through to Alaska, their answer was that since they were so far away from the usual routes that they had not run into that situation yet (great answer). If it was me, I would call the port of entry where you would have to clear Customs and ask them what the rules are at this time. Let us know what you find out, it is a good question.

Sounds like it could be Andy Young. Friend of mine, really nice guy.
You'll find him over at maulepilots.org under the same name.
