CANADIAN Forces Snowbird lost today.

One fatal, landed in a tree or on a front lawn. (Female victim). One landed on a house roof and is badly busted up, but was conscious. No word on the occupants of the home that I’ve found yet. Very sad.

Snowbirds have their maintenance techs on board when transiting, we don’t know which of the survivors is which.

Re: CANADIAN Forces Snowbird lost today.

Sounds like the pilot was the survivor, decease was their public affairs officer. 2 elderly occupants of the house were ok, lady in the basement and husband was in the garden.
Sad day.

Just watched the video of it. Two jets take off, one starts a steep climbing left turn, near the 180 point of a chandelle it spins, two ejection seats go off.

Re: CANADIAN Forces Snowbird lost today.

Bad deal, the elderly couple in the house, uninjured!

We had a similar flyover here Friday, a flight of four, two F-15's and two A-10's, in tight formation over our area's major hospitals, giving a big FU to the virus. I had forgotten about it, and was working anyway, but then just as I got on the freeway I remembered and checked the time. 4 mintues! I put the pedal down in the 425 hp Mack and hit 70 (eventually, going downhill) going thru a 65 mph section of I-15, and pulled off on the shoulder just past an exit (so way off the active lanes), shut the crane down and opened the door, and WHOOSH....they were directly overhead at a reasonably low altitude. I couldn't have timed it better then if I had tried. It really made my day, and proud to be an American etc. I can just imagine having that feeling, followed by witnessing one crashing, ugh.

Re: CANADIAN Forces Snowbird lost today.

The Canadian Snowbirds have been my favorite jet demonstration team to watch for many years. They do a great job.

Sorry to hear of the loss of a life and a jet. Those are tough. I came in to Great Falls around ten years back and their aircraft were parked there, but the pilots were all sitting around looking pretty low. They'd just had a mid air during a practice session. Two fatalities in that one.

I hope the Canadian Forces keeps the Snowbirds flying for many years to come. I hope the crews' hearts heal from their loss.

Re: CANADIAN Forces Snowbird lost today.

The CT-114 Tutor is only flown by the Snowbirds demonstration team, 9 aircraft and 2 spares. They have not been used for training for quite a few years. GE J85 engines, same as the T38.

Possibly an engine issue, although I didn't see anything out the tailpipe in the video, some reports of a "pop" followed by the zoom up. Target is to apex at 130 knots, assess and either eject or fly (glide). Sort of looked like left turn wingover that then snapped into a right spin, one turn, rotation stopped and the eject. Not great ejection seats from what I hear.

Deceased crew member was the PRO, public relations officer, not a pilot or engineer. She was catching a ride to the next port of call, Comox.

For us backcountry pilots, engine failures can happen, on takeoff, at a bad time. Or maybe you just think it failed, like a compressor pop, or a bad gauge in a Cirrus, and you react wrong. Shit happens.

You're right. There is one video taken from near the runway where you can hear the engine cough/pop just as the aircraft passes the camera. The aircraft then immediately starts it's pitch up and turn (SOP to get away from the other formation aircraft ASAP). It appears to have stalled (maybe?? hopefully the investigation will clear that up) and entered a single turn spin to the right. The pilot did an amazing job of stopping the spin giving them time to eject, although it appears that they didn't have enough altitude for the chutes to deploy.
