Cape Newenham LRRS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7VLeX-_LsISkip to the 1:00 mark if you're impatient. Then prepare to feel sick. A friend I used to fly with shot this video on a rare sunny day. We frequently got called in to service Alaska's numerous long-range defensive radar sites when the Air Force C-12s were not flying due to bad weather or overscheduling. Cape Newenham's runway rises 310 feet over its 3950' length. These runways were hurriedly built on the sides of mountains in the months after the Russians launched Sputnik.
Aircraft is a Cessna 441 with Garrett TPE331-10s, which gives instantaneous power and impressive climb performance.

My rule of thumb was, if any place I was flying into had "Cape" in front of the name, and LRRS after, it was going to be a miserable trip. "Point" was a close second.
I think Cape Lisburne was always the scariest.

Note the background image. A couple of us stayed a few days in July. Got to do some climbing and fishing while the contractors were repairing equipment. July can be pleasant in Cape Lisburne, but still some crazy wind.
