Carb ice Rotax 582 2 stroke

Little early for this subject, but what the hell. This Quicksilver is new to me. This will be the 1st fall winter that I can fly it.

There’s no provision for carb heat. What are the odds of getting carb ice, say if it’s 70% relative humidity and an air temp of 40°F-55°? We get a lot of this here in NW Oregon. I have ridden dirt bikes, quads, and snowmobiles forever. Carb ice has never been a problem. My snowmobiles are set up with hot water from the engine through the carbs. I’ve always left it turned off. Still no carb ice. Why would the Rotax 582 be any different?

What are you guys doing out there if you want to fly in weather where carb ice could be an issue and you don't have carb heat?

Thanks Rob

I looked into it for my own 582 which I now have about 130 hours on. What I found is that it is not an issue, I do not believe there has been a documented case of carb ice. Perhaps it is not an issue because from the butterfly to the rotary valve is a very short distance and everything except the carb itself is warm, and the carb throat is short?
I don't usually have the high humidity that you have, but in the spring when the snow is melting and the air temps are in the 30's to 40's the humidity is pretty high for here. I have never thought I had carb ice with the 582.

Sounds pretty risky to me, you should just buy a Maule.

I never had any issues with carb ice in any of the two stroke engines, don't sweat it.

Found the answer with help from Quicksilver group. Interesting. Variable venturi size due to using a round slide not a butterfly disc.
Interesting read.

Re: Carb ice Rotax 582 2 stroke

I've experienced carb ice two times burning 100% gasoline----once in my PA12 and once we were shelling corn with an old 1950's IH truck with the sheller mounted right on the truck. We'd be raking corn into it and it would chug down and die. Wait a little and go again for a little while. I have no proof but think the ethanol in an E10 acts as an anti icer.

I put about 300 hours on a 582 blue head (powered parachute) and never experienced carb ice, not to say it is impossible but also never heard of of anyone having an issue with it.
