Joe, you're the man. Were those taken with an iPhone? Not bad resolution.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

They were, I don't know what i'd do without it!! Some day we'll probably be able to take 10 MP pics with a cell phone...that'l be cool. Joe

Oh shit... I've run up that high a couple of times without O2 because of weather, and I was sick for a full day after. No thank you.

What the hell were you doing way up there with the airliners, Joe??

When ever we got over 500 ft AGL, you always complained about me being too high (in the nose bleed).

Cool pics!!

What's the story about the soft snow?

Pat, as for the 18,000 pic, I was bored out of my mind and it was fun climbing up there... but not as fun as the 20 min,26 sec of glider time I got on the way down ... As for the soft snow.... A mean cup of hot chocolate was calling my name and 30 degrees OAT was making the snow way to soft... almost ended up on my nose... :D

Joe:

Great pics! What kind of climb rate were you seeing approaching 18k? How do the controls in a supercub feel at that altitude?

The highest I have been in my spam can is 13.5k tapping the bottom of the jet stream for some serious ground speed and it got real lethargic in both climb and the control inputs there. A couple downdrafts encountered in cruise I couldn't climb through, and had to run at Vy to maintain what altitude I could until I could get out of them. 185 to 192 kts level flight sustained groundspeed in a 172 were way cool though. :D Never really thought to push it higher.....not sure how well she would have done.

I'd think that the PA-18 airfoil might hang in there better, especially coupled with the lower wing loading.

While aviation has made the world a smaller place, if you fall, it's still hard to miss!

...remember, life is uncertain, eat desert first!
... and, those that pound their guns into plows, will plow for those who don't.
