I've been to Roys/Amboy in my truck a few times headed out for desert adventure by land. Very cool to see your plane parked where there are normally cars/trucks.

I think I'm gonna open up a can here with this question, and I'm guilty of not digging far enough into the FAR/AIM probably, but here it goes:

Thoughts and cold hard regulation references on landing an aircraft anywhere you want in a non-populated or sparsely populated area? Dry lake-beds, sand bars, riverbeds, mountains etc.? Specifically in the lower 48, mainly California because we all know Alaska is special.
Assuming that you have the skills to land and have done your research on power lines and all that responsible pilot stuff, of course...

It's not the Feds that care where you land and take-off, as long as you don't buzz anyone or break anything. It's all the state, local, and land controlling regs that'll burn you if you're not careful... And sneaky!

In regards to landing at Roy's in Amboy - I e-mailed the caretaker there (his name is Charlie also) and this was his reply from a week ago:

Hello Charlie You need no permission the runway is in great shape as told there are a few minor bumps where the small wash is There are a few people that fly in. We only have unleaded 87 Octane and 91 Octane fuel and Desiel at the gas station. Bring your meal we only serve snacks and very cold refreshment drinks like the classic coke bottle and Route Beer 66. I will ask only if possible shoot a picture of Amboy from the sky for us. If not that's fine also. I have been wanting to take pictures of the Bristol Mountain range there are some historicle mines behind those hills. Let me know what time and date you will be in Amboy maybe I can meet you and tell you some of the History about the town. The owner Roy's son in law Buster was a very good pilot and aviation inspector and was also a barn stormer back in his day. We welcome you anytime. He later asked me if it was possible to get a local plane ride in order to take some aerial photos of Roy's and the nearby Bristol Mountains. I was going to offer, but then I he told me he weighs 275 Lbs and that would put me over gross on my 150. Bottom line is the guy is interested in aviation and is airplane friendly. I plan to drop in and meet him in the near future (before it gets hot).

I flew in a couple of years ago with Glidergeek (I believe he is one of the regular visiters). Charlie sounds like the guy I talked to also about flying in at the time. Very friendly person and very freindly people at the gas station. No problem to taxi the plane out the the Roy's sign out front, too.
