Cessna 170B, tight landing

Narrow approach with an S turn at slow speeds into a short gravel bar, was pretty exciting, I also show the safety precautions for this operations and examples of other landings.

Excellent video, Larry, and excellent explanation of techniques used. The deceleration on short final caused sink which required power. This critical part of the power/pitch approach brings the throttle into dynamic play as the very accurate glide angle and rate of descent control al the way to the ground. When we practice for this kind of flying on the normal runway, we know we have not accomplished this deceleration/sink/power technique and that we are too fast if we have to close throttle before touchdown. Good job.

Even though you had enough power to climb immediately above the dangerously slow, you stayed in low ground effect over gravel bar and water to develop zoom reserve airspeed that makes maneuvering in the narrow and crooked river safe. Immediate climb draws too many into the less safe Vx or Vy climb immediately technique. Good job.

Excelent flying!! Maneuvering on final is not often discussed, You do a great job of slowing and maneuvering so you arrive at your spot without a lot of energy left. I see many pilots that are unable to configure for landing and approach without a mile of straight glide path. They end up diving down to the landing area and pick up too much speed. DENNY
