Cessna 172 180 conversion... Constant speed

Who has the stc for the 180hp on the skyhawk with the constant speed prop?

Thanks

I know several folks that have that conversion. Why do you want a constant speed. Just somthing else to maintain. Two buddies that I know that have them wish they had gone fixed pitch.

Contact Joe Birkemeyer at Bauman floats. He has contact and experience with several STC holders and can help you. Here is his website:

Re: Cessna 172 180 conversion... Constant speed

I went with the delair conversion on my 170B they also have the stc for the 172 with bolth fixed an cs props. I have been verry pleased with mine, I have the MT prop {see john in the last post about that} Im only half convinced you need a cs prop on a plane that goes under 140mph, but there is no good fixed pitch STCed for that aplication so the MT is the one to have.

559-784-9440 is the number at delair, Harry is verry knoledeable about cessnas and can asnser all your questions.

John and Larry at flight resource were a great help and went out of there way to get me into the best prop for my plane i highly recomend them.

Avcon had/has the STC for the 172 180hp Lycoming with the C/S prop. Seems like I heard they sold the STC to someone else...

Airplains in Kansas has a nice STC for the 172 utilizing a fixed pitch prop and an available gross weight increase.

Re: Cessna 172 180 conversion... Constant speed

Penn yan has one too and they can actually change your O-320 into an O-360 if you want, Doyne makes one too but I'm not sure if either of them have the CS Prop. Avcon is a CS and the Bush isn't. Both are sold by the William's in Udal Kansas.

I don't know what kind of money you want to spend, but you might want to check out Stoots Aviation. They sell a 200 hp IO-360 STC and it has better fuel economy and they are working on a 210 hp STC. Better economy equals better range and the 42 gallon tanks in the 172's don't go as far with the big engines.

If you can sell your plane it would be a lot cheaper for you to find one that is already converted (unless your me #-o ). Lots of deals out there still.

Re: Cessna 172 180 conversion... Constant speed

i was just curious, we have a airplains 180 fixed pitch with the powerflow short stack.

But there is this hawk at our airport, been sitting for some years, and it has floats. Talked to the owner but he thinks its worth 30,000. Has not flown in at least ten years.

I always figured with a C/S prop you have a climb prop and a cruse prop all in one

Re: Cessna 172 180 conversion... Constant speed

No real answer to your question, but several years ago my cousin/business partner had a '56 C172 with the Lycoming 180hp/CS prop conversion...WOW. We took off once with 5 people (4 adults and a teenager) on board, about 200lbs of rafting gear, and about 30 gallons of fuel, and that sucker got airborne and flew beautifully using about 1000 feet of airstrip. No STOL kits, just a great airplane. He sold it to buy the 135 certificate we're running now, but I sure miss that bird. It was a dream to fly. Since then we bought a '61 C180D with Wing X extentions, Sportsman STOL and VG's. I still think that 180hp C172 flew just as nicely doing short field/heavy lifting work.

Re: Cessna 172 180 conversion... Constant speed

I was interested in the 180 hp conversion for my 172. Then I started looking for them on Trade-a-plane and realized that you can buy the whole converted airplane for the cost of the STC. I have found low to mid time engines on nice airplanes for less than $40k. Pen yan quoted me $35k. I would rather have the fixed pitch though for simplicity.

Re: Cessna 172 180 conversion... Constant speed

I have a C150/150 taildragger- I love the airplane but would rather buy one already done (which I did) than to convert one myself. To take on just the t/w conversion or just the engine conversion maybe wouldn't be so bad, but to take on both would overwhelm a lot of people (myself included). That's the same reson I don't build an experimental-- I'd rather fly than wrench. With some folks it's the other way around -- those are the ones who should do the converting (and building) themselves.
