Cessna 182 Cargo Pod

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Cessna 182 Cargo Pod

I am interested in installing a cargo pod on my 67 C-182. I spoke with a sales rep from Aerocet, and was informed that their pod would only fit the narrow body (pre 62 I think) fuselage. I am considering buying a Firmin pod and modifying it to fit my wider fuselage, then applying for a field approval.
Any positive suggestions on an easier route would be appreciated.
I already have a Selkirk extended baggage, and do not wish to switch airplanes.
Thanks.

Cessna 182 Cargo Pod

Are you talking about a Firman Alaska bush pod for a super cub, Or the ones he makes for the Cessna? The cessna pods Boby at Alaska Bush pods make are pretty big. His big Cessna pod would probably work but most people are field approving them on 180,185 using the fact that Cessna had a cargo pod on the 185.
It seems like a modified Aerocet pod with a field approval on the model deviation might be doable and there can’t be much difference in a wide body vs narrow on the 182.
What about a 206 pod?

Re: Cessna 182 Cargo Pod

I have a Piatt pod on my 180, I believe it is the same thing as a Firmin. I just put it back on for the winter.

These pods are quite specifically designed to fit all the complicated curves in the lower fuselage. You'll get an idea of this if you zoom in on the picture.

I don't think you could modify one of these to fit a wide body 182.

Re: Cessna 182 Cargo Pod

Great looking plane! Thanks for the pic!
I have spoken with Bob Piatt about this, a couple times, and he thinks theres a possibility that it may fit the "67" 182 fuselage without modification. The fuselage is 4" wider than the 180 at the widest point. If the longitudinal lines are the same, but the width contour is different, I thought about cutting the pod in half down the center, installing the (2) halves, then re-fiberglassing the 4" gap down the center.

I am new to this site, but i did find a very old post (from 2007 i think), from someone who said they had a pod which was made in Hawaii, and fit a 182G - 182M. Mine is a K model. If someone has had prior approval for a wide 182, it would make things a little easier.

Re: Cessna 182 Cargo Pod

Actually, just found that old post again. It was from 2012, not 2017. The username was "182 STOL driver". He mentions having a pod for a wide body 182. Also mentions an STC. Says it will fit the 180-185 also. Hmmm.

I'm all ears.

I don't recall 182 STOL driver having posted in quite a while?

I've never seen a pod for a "wide body" 182, pretty sure there is no such thing. I'd be delighted to be wrong about that, could use one for my E model as well.

Re: Cessna 182 Cargo Pod

There was a guy at the high sierra fly in this year with a late model 182. It had a belly pod on it. He came all the way from brazil with it. I dont have a picture. Somebody must make them.

It would be almost the same as a 206 pod. Really should be someone making them if there isn't already.

No, nothing that will fit that bird. Sorry.

And Monty from Aerocet said:

Thank you very much for your inquiry. The Aerocet® Skypod will only fit the 182 narrow body models, pre-1962. This is something that may be produced at some point, however not in the near future. Unfortunately, we are not aware of someone else that produces one either. Thank you again for your inquiry Mike..
