CEssna 182 Interior Door Handles

Good Day All,

In need of an interior door handle for 73 182P. The splines on the inside of the handle are stripped.

Been looking around on the net for a source but as of yet no real good leads.

The parts manual lists the part number as 0517006-2; which matches the number on the removed broken one.

Anyone have a good source to pass along? A canadian source would be a plus!

Cheers

A small vice-grip is a perfect fit! If that doesn't fit your pistol, you might check on the C170 Assn discussion site-- seems like I remember a thread describing old Chev or Ford handles as being a perfect fit. Don't know what model or spec though.

I have a good source for 1957 handles, but I assume these will not fit.

I see that the part you have has been superceeded, with a new number that is available for just under $200.

The following site looks good as an alternate:

Funny how a "car parts store" is advertising this way.

Hmmm.

Years ago I started drilling the steel splined shafts and tapping for 6-32 machine screw. I drill and CS the handle accordingly. Done deal.

For those who didn't follow the link: "may be a suitable replacement for part numbers 0517006-2 or 0517039-2". I think that's great, but nobody but a Cessna guy (and a well-informed one at that) is gonna know what that means.

Re: CEssna 182 Interior Door Handles

FWIW, I just recently replaced the window latch on my 63 P172D with one designed for a 47-48 Chevy front window vent. Exact replacement, even the same numbers printed on the part, $27.50 delivered. It might be that something similar is available for the Skylane.

But another thought. Since it's the splines inside the handle that are worn off, either pin it (drill through both the handle and the stub), or perhaps do some creative molding with JB Weld and form new splines inside the handle. Personally I'd go the pin route.

Re: CEssna 182 Interior Door Handles

Do the future owner(s) of your airplane a favor & do NOT JB Weld it! One of my door handles appears to be JB'd on, at least it doesn't wanna come off after I remove the clip, and I'm not gonna tear things up by forcing it off. I was able to do what I wanted to do by taking the door panel loose & rotating it, but I'm still not happy about it.

Re: CEssna 182 Interior Door Handles

 well, isn't it fun finding these gems on an older airframe that is now your ( or mine depending on a flip of the coin). I run into " mods" like this and I just shake my head and smile. For the most part my plane is in great shape but sometimes when I dig in deeper I wish I hadn't been so curious.

Re: CEssna 182 Interior Door Handles

I have a handle in need of replacement due to a worn inside spline.

It's part number is 0517006-2C

My local Cessna man tells me that now is 0517039-2 and to drop the C.

Some Google trawling the 0517039-2 has a steel spline and should last.

Is that correct and what is the best choice for such?

Thanks.

Re: CEssna 182 Interior Door Handles

The original handles were designed to fail rather than the part in the door…..”pot metal” is what we always called it. MUCH better to strip the handle than the spline in the door.

At one point, one of the handles in my 170B stripped. I removed it, and Lo and behold, on the inside, there was prominently featured a “Blue Oval”. Turns out it was a 46 to 50 ish Ford passenger car part.

Called up JC Whitney and had a pair of brand new replacements in a few days. I can’t recall total cost, but wasn’t over $50.

I’d bet that most automotive door handles of that vintage might work…..but let’s not turn this into an STC discussion….. :…

Re: CEssna 182 Interior Door Handles

Here’s everything required: Pre-1974 Cessnas with rotating door handles, the parts from from an early 60's Ford Falcon.

If helpful, here’s a blog post that outlines realigning doors and overhauling the internals of the door latch mechanism: http://welch.com/n46pg/category/doors/

Links to parts:

The chrome door handle has a slightly difference appearance from the 70's planes, but is a PERFECT fit to the mechanism spline; and the retaining clip is distinguishable the Cessna brand version I bought to compare. The difference was the clip with the Falcon door handle was included and the Cessna clip cost me $10 in 2017.
