Cessna 182P Cowl

Cessna 182P Cowl

Good Day all,

The 182 needs some cowl work done, paint touch touch-ups etc in around the engine intake area.

Cowls....can you buy them aftermarket or just used? Or better to just repair/repaint the old one.

A quick search to replace turned up not much.

You probably don't want to even think about replacing a cowling. I once asked a gent why he'd paid so much for a 185 wreck I'd parked. He pointed at the cowling which was in excellent condition, and stated that cowling complete and essentially pristine was worth around $26,000. That was in 1996. I expect 182 cowling aren't quite as precious, but.....

I'd repair the one you have. That said, Selkirk was making carbon fiber cowling for some Cessna a few years ago. No idea what those went for, but I'd bet it'll take your breath away.

I'm with Mike. Usually much cheaper to repair/repaint. I had some done on my 180 cowling last summer and it turned out great and was under $1000. He had a used one he would've sold me for 8k. I think I made out pretty good.

Just looked on Selkirk's website. $7900-$10,000, depending on year. They say no weight savings, so I would guess the benefit would be starting with something new rather than having to repair the old.

If the aluminum formed rings behind the spinner on the nose bowl are in good shape and not cracking your lucky. I had to have cracks in mine welded on two occasions. I loved my 182P but that issue alone drove me nuts. Knowing what was going on behind the nosebowl was enough of a distraction to keep me from fixing the nicks and dings on the nose bowl. At 20 feet, no one notices anyway.
