INDEPENDENCE, Calif. - One person was killed in the crash of a small plane in Inyo County, authorities said Wednesday.

The crash site was in the Poverty Hills, southeast of Tinnemaha campground, said sheriff's dispatcher Rick Olson.

The victim was not immediately identified.

The area is on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada about 200 miles north of Los Angeles.

The truth will set you on the path to being free

I know the area pretty well. I have spent some time around the Lone Pine / Independence / Bishop Area last fall. I posted some pictures of Lone Pine and Independence in my gallery. That area is pretty inhospitable unless your in the vicinity of hwy 395. Night time temps have been well below freezing, etc. There is opportunity for survivable forced landing areas though as it is mostly a large desert valley pretty well void of trees. Of course loss of control and or structural failure are another matter.

I live about 10 miles from the crash site. We were there the morning after to see the results. Large fire, not much left. He hit a ridge at about 4800' on a very black night. He had just passed a small hill that is 6000'.
I have no idea why he was there at that altitude.
