Cessna tied down ring retract spring replacement

Last night I spent an hour getting my ass kicked trying to figure out how to install the new springs that hold the tie down rings retracted in my 1954 cessna 180. I finally gave up, and an internet search yielded nothing.....any ideas? I'm prolly over thinking it...

Re: Cessna tied down ring retract spring replacement

I'm pretty sure you need to remove the strut from the wing to get at it. My springs were broken when I got the plane in 1988 so I just wedge a short piece of nylon tie into the slot to hold the ring in the retract position.

Marty, sorry forgot to mention that I have the struts off.... It seems extremely simple, but I couldn't figure it out....maybe today with a fresh brain :-)

Re: Cessna tied down ring retract spring replacement

Maybe take pictures for the rest of us when you figure it out. Looking at the parts manual, I see there is a type "A" and "B". I think we have A with just one long pin that goes through the tie down ring where it pivots. Looks like the spring goes around that pivot with a short and long arm on the spring. Is there a groove that the short engages in the ring with the long catching on the alumium casting in the strut?

Bringing an old one back from the dead.

Anyone know where to get the PN 0723601-2 springs for the tie down rings besides Yingling Cessna... A bit hard to swallow $40 bucks a shot for such a simple part...

Brian.

Old post so hopefully someone is watching.
I’m trying to figure out how they ever got these springs in position. Anyone have a video or instructions.
I did pay the $40 each and don’t want to see these springs get loose and disappear when they get a chance to escape.
I’m going to try posting a picture.

Re: Cessna tied down ring retract spring replacement

I’m holding the return spring in position with a bit of lock wire.
From where it is the spring has to torque about 3/4 of a circle to grab the tie down anchor.
That seems like a ridiculous amount of torque, so I’m thinking it is wrong.
But … this cranking the spring up, I could also flip the spring around and torque it just as badly in the unwind direction.
No information on which way this fits.

Re: Cessna tied down ring retract spring replacement

Ha! I figured out that the spring bar fits inside the tie down ring, not pushing on the outside of the ring but lifting on the inside.
Easy peasy after that, but took a few days thinking and messing around to get it.
