Cherokee eats cessna 180

Today at Spokane Felts Field a Cherokee taxied right into a very nice cessna 180 that was tied down on the ramp. The left wing of the piper caught the exhaust and lower cowling of the 180 and spun the cherokee around and chopped up the left wing of the 180 and almost cut the airplane in half near the baggage door. The prop from the cherokee threw pullys and other parts 150 feet. Ironic that it happened directly in front of the local FSDO but since it's Sunday no Fed's were present. Both airplanes are now in a friends hanger. I'm just glad there were no occupants in the 180. I haven't seen the 180 before so it's either from out of town or new to the field. Not sure about the cherokee but it was nobody I knew.

Wow, any photos? Glad nobody was hurt and it wasn't yesterday because we were flying Young Eagles.

I don't have pictures but talk to our mutual friend with the 195 or PB for more details. They both helped move the airplanes into the Eagle East hanger.

I taxied my 1985 Toyota pickup truck into a parked C172 when I was a lad. I know how the Cherokee guy feels. The worst part was 'fessing - up to the crotchety old FBO owner...who turned out to be a lifelong friend...what this dumb - assed kid did.

One of our Crop duster pilots when I was a kid taxied a Ag-Cat into 55 gallon barrel > shot that (empty) barrel 60-70 yards out into field.

I can't speak for anywhere but the far north, but I've seen more pilots fired for running airplanes into shit that any other reason. Oil drums, pallets, snow machines, other airplanes... All dumb, and all very expensive.

Re: Cherokee eats cessna 180

I happened to be in the hanger this morning looking at the chopped up 180 when the owner arrived and found out about what happended to his airplane for the first time. He was from Alabama and has owned the airplane for 28 years. It was truely a sad moment. It's a good thing the cherokee owner wasn't around. It even chopped up his sleeping bag that was in the baggage area. Now it's sitting right next to Jame's Maule.

Re: Cherokee eats cessna 180

I sometimes read the accident analysis on the FAA Site. The worst one for this kind of thing I found was two student pilots with solo certificates went out together. After they landed they were afraid they were going to get caught flying together so the passenger jumped out and took off running. Guess he forgot you couldn't see the prop while the engine was running. It was fatal.

Hey now, lets not get carried away...it was officially a Dakota that ran amok. #-o But I do agree, you don't like to see Skywagons diminish in numbers-

Wow, that stinks. I can't imagine how the 180 owner felt when he saw that

Lil bit of patchy here, tape there - good as new!
Walmart has the sleeping bag on sale for $19.99

Too bad, really not nice to see an airplane ripped up like that.
Nice Antoniotorovovov in the background, though!

Re: Cherokee eats cessna 180

Looks like a total. Just enough parts to covert a 182B to a Skywagon. Not a real Skywagon but a pretend one.

The Dakota driver better get out his wallet, let the adjusters take ten steps, turn arround, draw and fire.

Anybody know what the Dakoyta guy was looking at when it happened. Bet he was adjusting his altimeter or entering his destination on his GPS. Should be a good reminder to look out side more than in
