Re: Chopper down at SLC

I would bet 100 to 1 that he hit the gooseneck with the main rotor. If that is not then case then he caught a skid on the trailer resulting in a dynamic rollover.

Why would anyone try to land a low rotor chopper on a gooseneck trailer?

Wow, I guess that is why I was hired twice to pick and set a chopper on a flatbed trailer with my crane. At the time I asked why they didn't just land on it, "you're cheaper" was all they said.

Helicopters are landed on all kinds of trailers-regularly.......
In good 'conditions' (no, or steady-light, wind) and by good pilots.
Sometimes (fortunately very rarely..), even if those 'conditions' are met, Sh*t happens......... :(

Might I add, getting complacent is very 'unhealthy', at any high risk endeavor, but it is a VERY common trap for us ALL!

Why is this SO fresh in my mind? Well, yesterday I backed my SUV into a post at the airport that I have missed hundreds of times before........
Over 3K worth of 'fix-it' required.......... #-o
Only 2 dimensions to deal with, but 1 added 'demention' was a distracted/complacent driver......

Re: Chopper down at SLC

The worst part of the whole thing is that they were just moving it acrossed the Valley, maybe 15 miles. He was going to give Heli Rides at an activity in Draper. Don't have any idea why he didn't just fly it there, guess he had his reasons. RIP
