Circumnavigating the SFRA

Washington, DC is surrounded by a Special Flight Rules area, SFRA. It is relatively straightforward to fly into and out of the SFRA, but you can't play around when in that airspace. I decided to circumnavigate the SFRA yesterday and stop at a few grass strips around the perimeter while I was at it. I had to dodge restricted areas around Camp David, Phillips Army Airfield, Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Dahlgren Naval Surface Warfare Center, and AP Hill Army Airfield. In addition, I had the Class B airspace around DC and Baltimore to contend with. Once I got through all of that, it was a pretty sweet day!

Re: Circumnavigating the SFRA

Flyhound,

Great video. I look forward to meeting you sometime soon. I'm laid up with a broken ankle at this time. :(

The airspace around here will get your license yanked so fast. Get lost anywhere else in the country and your embarrassed. Get lost around here, cross and invisible line, and you will have an F16 wing-man weather you like it or not. If you fly slow, fear not, you will have a blackhawk wing-man. Be care around P-40 (Camp David), it can expand after your flight brief and you are still responsible.

If you can navigate the airspace, it really is some beautiful flying. 8)

Massey is a great stop, don't miss the Chili-Fest, We will have to go hoping around when I get back up. Stop by Essex Skypark some time (W48) when you get a chance. Don't forget fly-ins.com, there are constant fly-ins around the area.

Take care,
Tom

If I'd have known you were coming near Pax River I'd have met you at an airport with a burger or something!

Re: Circumnavigating the SFRA

Tomkatz: I do need to drop in to Essex Airpark on one of my aerial wanderings. I'll try and schedule my do in after you've healed.

Thanks for the kudos MauMau

CamTom: I'll PM you a couple days in advance of my next trip that way. Maybe we can share some chow and some flying stories. I never noticed your location was Pax River.

I need to make a pilgrimage to Campbell field (9VG) sometime this summer. Maybe several of us could fly over there for their "Soup on Sunday" deal and I could check another local grass strip off of my list. I flew solo yesterday, but everywhere I go I meet new people that seem like old friends. Flying is like that.

Fly-hound & Tom

I will be having a doctors appointment this Wednesday. At that time he will let me know a round about when I will be able to fly again. As soon as I'm able, I'm planning a trip up to Maine with several friends that you already have met. My good friend Bill Cloughly was in your video, he was flying the polished aluminum RV with a black stripes on the wing. A group of other good friends were at Kentmore the afternoon that you were there, they should have had two RVs and several other planes. they got there in the afternoon and stayed until sunset.

I'm hoping to run into mau malu up in Maine. It will be a three day camping trip. We are looking to leave on a Friday, fly up and circle the Statue of Liberty, stop for lunch and continue onto Main. So far we have five ships going and you are always welcome.

I would definitely love to go to Campbells Field with you. Watch the wires on the south side. Check with Gordon in advance. Ever since he had the baby he is not as regular as he once was. you will be free to land, but no hot dogs will be available. in that event Cambridge and Georgetown are two most excellent airfields with restaurants. If we go, we can do the beach run below Wallopps Island.

Sorry for the long winded reply, I have a broken leg with not much else to do.

Take care,
Tom

Awesome! Yeah, I just got here earlier this month. The last 7 months have held a lot of moving around for us.
