Clipped Wing Cub Fun (PlaneNapped)

Dang, what can I say. I have been having a blast flying my friend's 1940 Reed Clipped Wing J-3 Cub. There aren't too many of these planes around so I feel pretty honored that he trust me with this little jem. I flew it up to Kelly Airpark today to give Tadpole a look at it in flight. There is nothing like flying a J3 from the back seat low and slow with the window open. They say time spent flying a Cub is added back onto to your life. I've actually plane napped it and stuffed it into my hangar.

I got my first flight in a J-3 a few weeks ago in Patrol Guy's unclipped J-3 ... what a fun flyin' little plane. Flying from the back seat wasn't nearly as weird as I thought it would be. Patrol Guy said I scared him a little when he shot this photo:

Looks fun, what type of performance does this plane have on climb at altitude?

Does it take a lot more runway vs a standard J3?

Is this one back on Barnstormer?

Must be a joy to fly.

It has pretty good performance taking off from almost 7000' agl. Never flew a stock winged J 3 at this altitude but imagine it would do better with more wing area.

It is a really nice plane and is for sale since the owner is looking for a side by side LSA. If you are interested come on over and i'll arrange a ride for you.

Sounds very nice. I just wondered how much one gives up with the shorter wings.

Did you have a guest as to rate of climb?

I have a couple of hills to go over.

You are another one up early!

And if memory serves, the J3 which Zane flew came out of Bushwagon's back yard.... =D>

And hey, BW, what's that funny lookin' orange and cream thing in the back of the hangar :?: :?

A good guess as to rate of climb? Yes, it is going to be different every time you fly it depending on conditions :-)
I have seen anywhere from 100-600fpm.

Here is a really good article by Budd Davisson about the Clipped Wing http://www.airbum.com/pireps/PirepClippedCub.html
