Cold Air

It's gotten cold up here in the Pacific NW. And boy, howdy, do these airplanes like it! (provided you can get them started...)

You are right, I went from NE Montana into BFI yesterday. Our airport elevation is 2005 msl, the temp was -34 F and the pressure was 30.34. That put the density altitude at 3866 ft below SL. I was watching a B-737 and that take of looked amazing then all of a sudden a B-777 did what looked to be a max perf take off. Man, that thing is a rocket.

Speaking of getting them started, I think I'm having impulse cupeling problems on my cub, it won't start cold with the starter, but starts right up proping it. Even at 20F. Not uncommon I guess, seems like back 30 some years ago my Stinson was the same way. And yes it is cold for us western WA whimps.........

just got back in this morning at 0018 on R and R leave from Iraq. Left positive 22C and ended up in:

PAFA 161953Z 00000KT 1SM R01L/6000VP6000FT -SN BR SCT001 OVC002 M17/M20 A3080

Going to fly tonight to finish up my exception for no night flight on my private pilot. Pretty funny that I've logged 235 hours of NVGs in the darkest area of the planet during the last 5 months and I have to do laps around the pattern at Fairbanks for 1.5 to finish my qualification to fly the plane. I'm scared of the chill during the preflight.

This was a problem years ago in Lycoming 0-235-L2C's in C-152's and Beech Skippers. Starters just turned them to fast. My fix was to just hit the starter for about a second and the thing would usually catch after you let off the starter and it was winding down.

Yeah, my starter turns too fast, but the impulse cuplings are inconsistant even at slow speed cranking, but about 90+% hand proping. Slick mags, not the best. I've been working on a buddy's anteque Bendix mag on an old cub that has no impulse at all and it dose just fine, why can't they do that on the new ones.........

Enjoy yourself while you can, you'll be back in the sand box too soon. Are you married? If so don't forget her or she may forget you. Don't ask.

I here ya. I flew on the 16th (20F @ S43) and yes my 172 thought she was a 185 in that cold air.

By the way, your bound to hear from some boys here in them colder states when you remark on how cold it is right now in WA. When it warms up to 20F in places like Fairbanks, they break out the lawn chairs and beer.

Also of note...I have much easier time with starts now that I have installed a "Reiff" engine pre-heater. Starts about the same in 20F as it does in 70F.

I should have said - "cold for here"... But the airplane was happy just the same.

That said, if any of you guys up there are breaking out the beer, let me know!

-16F on the front porch right now and I just sat out there to have a beer in case you were challenging me. The Alaskan Amber was great in the natural snow cup holder.

Good on ya!

If you pass through Seattle on your way back, let me know. Next one's on me, even if it will be a bit warmer!

That perception of Cold is totally regional, here in L.A. it froze down to 2000' or so last night and listening to the news this morning you'd think nobody had ever seen that before. But when we lived in Edmonton, it warmed up to 20 or so and my dad thought it was time to wash the car in a t-shirt
