Colorado's best backcountry airstrip, bar none

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Colorado's best backcountry airstrip, bar none

I added Marble to shortfield.com and linked to some shortfielder's videos.

Marble Airstrip - shortfield.com

This is the new version of shortfield.com and i'm still working out some kinks. You won't be able to upload content (descriptions, videos, phtos, pireps, etc.) for another few days or so, but it's slowly coming together. One of the new features is the ability to link to existing videos on youtube or vimeo. So instead of uploading videos you've already posted elsewhere, you can just paste the embed code when you want to add a video to shortfield.com. There is also a new community environment that allows you to better communicate with each other, share photos/videos, etc. Anyway, there are several other things in the works, so check it out and let me know what you think.

Re: Colorado's best backcountry airstrip, bar none

Chris,

I stress the importance of contacting the Gallegos before ANYONE goes in there. After the recent accident I would hate for someone to abuse our delicate privileges of using this remarkable airstrip. Would you please add this as a note to the airstrip mark (I tried but cannot). I know very few details about he recent accident, so I'm not going to comment on that.

Thanks,
Matt

Yes, I will add that. Marble is a PRIVATE strip and although its on shortfield.com and has been featured in Pilot Getaways (etc.), you must have the owners permission.

Re: Colorado's best backcountry airstrip, bar none

Yes, I understand. But that was with the old owners (Pilot Getaways article) and the current owners that purchased the strip a few years ago are not pilots and are concerned about the legal implications of operating the strip (but are terrific people and pilot friendly). I guess this is just a touchy topic at the moment and I hope others don't go in there abusing the privileges because they saw it on some map (There is a reason why it's not on the sectional / my strip too for that matter).

Re: Colorado's best backcountry airstrip, bar none

I am in total agreement with you Mountainmatt. The reason I brought up the Pilot Getways article was to highlight the fact that lots of people (myself included) know where this airstrip is, but most don't know if they can land there, field condition, current ownership, etc. This is when people get into trouble.

One of the goals with shortfield.com is to provide a place where pilots can get/share current (and hopefully accurate) information about airstrips. Hopefully when airstrips like Marble pop-up here (or on other websites, in old magazines, on old maps, etc.) people won't have to guess at the laws, ownership, or condition of the strip. Instead, they can go to shortfield.com and get the latest as reported by fellow pilots, etc.

Sounds great Chris. That's my beef with the sectional, when you're in the plane flying and you see a marked strip it looks more inviting and has little to no info. I just saw the mark with no info and was concerned. (I may get a little protective of the few strips that allow access too. There's not many around here.)

Chris, and Zane too
I wonder if your websites have a provision, or could have, for releases and owner contact information for these strips where the owners would like contact and releases with folks that would like to visit.
Might be a nice/helpful idea. Be nice to have a sort of central location for all that sort of stuff.

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

That's a good feature request for Shortfield.com, probably should go into the wiki/airstrip info for each respective strip. We'll hopefully be resuscitating the Shortfield explorer plugin for the BCP forum, as a mini strip data block and link to the main airstrip data page on SF.

I would buy the first GPS that when you push the "more information" button, the owner's name and phone number came up for the tiny little strips.

Just got back this morning. Marble is simply amazing. Here's a few pictures, I took a lot of pics/vid, but that'll have to wait a while until I get some free time. Bushwagon, Tadpole and Shortfielder are still there camping. The Gallegos' treated us like royalty and are terrific people. Thank You Glen and Diane! (**Please do NOT go into Marble without contacting the Gallegos Family. A waiver is a must, and we do not want to get this gem shut down.**)

What an amazing weekend of mountain flying and camping in Marble, Colorado. You couldn't have asked for better weather. Extremely light winds provided for some pretty incredible valley flying and 14er exploration for our Saturday fly-out. Had an awesome time hanging out with Mountain Matt, Tadpole, Shortfielder, and the Gallegos' (owners).

Re: Colorado's best backcountry airstrip, bar none

What a great weekend. It's truly what I needed after all this down time from the surgery.

The weather was amazing all weekend, it's so rare to get negligible winds aloft in the mountains here and it really let us explore more than we normally get to do. I know I learned a lot of new peaks and passes.

It was great to see MountainMatt and Shortfielder again. Marble is a fantastic spot, I can't believe a place like that is so close to home....via airplane that is! The owners are wonderful and I can't wait to sit around and chat with them in the future some more. I did the hike back to the waterfall and up around the quarry. My hip did very well...until I fell in the river! Man that was cold!

I don't have any pictures or video except for a couple of crappy overheads of Marble on my phone. I'm shopping for a new airplane / trip camera, but my memory bank is full up with a great time!

Thanks to Bushwagon for inviting me along...and of course the Gallegos for allowing us into their private haven!

Re: Colorado's best backcountry airstrip, bar none

The Colorado Pilots Association went well. Here are pictures of our flight from Fort Collins to Marble and back. There are pictures of the waterfall.

Marble, Colorado, Colorado Pilots Association fly-in and campout. 09/11/2010. Each year the wonderful owners of the private Marble Airport host a fly-in and campout for CPA members. We have a BBQ on Saturday evening, then instruments and singing until the wee hours! It frosted Friday and Saturday nights, so early morning departures were delayed until the frost melted. It is already fall in the Colorado High Country at 7,700 MSL in the Crystal River Valley at Marble. The Marble museum is often open Saturday and Sunday 11AM-4PM. This time there was no one available, so next time I'll know to call ahead to schedule a time and to request a museum docent for a tour. :-) When we crossed the continental divide, eastbound, near Estes Park, there was a large plume of smoke. We diverted around the TFR and took pictures. This turned out to be the Reservoir Road Fire west of Loveland, CO.
