Re: Cool Pic

Thanks for the link. I really like the mods on the Stinson....skylight, observer doors, observer panel in the frame. Anyone know anything about this Stinson?

Re: Cool Pic - Stinson

The flaps are wider than the rest of the wing. Am I seeing that right?

Asa,
Don't tempt me, as that would look pretty cool.

The whole personality of the plane is transformed with the observation windows and the big tires. I like it!

Man I love Stinsons! I hear they are a workhorse. I’m still on the fence between a Stinson and a Maule!

It’s a tough choice! I picked Maule because it was new enough that the bank would finance it. If you have cash, you’ve got more options. And it’s more than 40 years newer. But I loves me a Stinson!

I have never seen a Stinson on 35's. Wow. One could hope it's got a 470 in it too.

That is one sweet looking Stinson! Is says Super 210 Voyager on the side of the cowl. Must be a 210hp Continental. Not sure I’ve seen a Stinson with that engine.

Cool Pic - Stinson

Are there any variations of a Franklin engine that’s 210 HP?

I know there is a 220...

IO-360, standard-restricted category. That looks like fun to me, would love to hear the details.

Cool Pic - Stinson

I used to fly for the Alsworths.

It is a very heavily modified Voyager, list of mods as long as your arm. IO-360 Continental powered beast. Big flaps, big cargo door, big baggage area. On days when the winds were howling and the Cubs were cowering the “Black Bird” as she is known would go pluck our hunters off the tundra with ease. I watched it haul two guys and an enormous load of king salmon from Dillingham out to Port Alsworth, total payload was OMG. And the fish was in one of the big white totes they use at the cannery. It is the coolest plane I’ve ever been around....an absolute workhorse of a bushplane.

Re: Cool Pic - Stinson

How can we get more info on the longer cord flaps and larger cargo/cargo door?

Those are on my list of desired mods, but I haven't come across and 337’s or stc's for them yet.

15 years ago they'd build you one. :-)

Wayne Alsworth Sr. is behind this plane, last I knew he was down in Soldotna. If one were to call Lake Clark Air I'm certain they could steer you in the right direction.

While I have the stinson guys here,
How many notches are the flaps supposed to have? Mine has four at ten degrees a notch. My books say 30 degrees and two notches.

There's an orange one that comes into my airport pretty often, N108TD as I recall.
I've seen hot-rodded Stinsons with just about everything you could stuff into it:
Lyc 360, Lyc IO-360, Lyc O-435, Lyc O-540, 220 Frank, Continental IO-360, Cont O-470.
Guess that's it.

Re: Cool Pic - Stinson

When I get back in town I'll have to follow up with Wayne Allsworth Sr. then, thanks for the lead.

Formandfunction - There are supposed to be 2 notches, I believe one at 26-28* and the other at 30-32*. I'll clarify those numbers when I get back in town.

Many Stinsons have a third notch added at the aileron max down angle, which I believe is around 13*, yours is the first I have heard of with 4 notches. Do you have max 40* on yours?

I think Hotrod has pretty much all the standard Stinson stc'd engine conversions. The only ones missing I can think of is the Franklin turbo 250hp and NA 180hp. I'm likely going to go with the 250hp o540 because the odds of finding a good Franklin turbo 250hp are poor. But I did see there was one for sale on here at one point. Does anybody know anything about this plane?

While we are talking Stinson mods...
I'm sure most people know that the stock Stinson 108 flaps leave a lot to be desired. The flap chord length is quite a bit shorter than the ailerons, and max travel is only around 30*.

I'd really like to know how this wing flies with longer chord length flaps.

The Stinson L5 has a wing that looks almost identical, and it's flaps have the same chord as the ailerons, and have 40* travel. The late models also have drooping ailerons that can go up to 15*.

Seems to me the 108 would be a really sweet slow flying machine with another 4" flap chord length, and droopy ailerons.
