Re: Coordinating turns - embarassing question

Actually that is not necessarily true about part 23. Some aircraft certified under those regs have aileron rudder interconnect, some have balance elements in the controls that drag to the inside of a turn. Some have more complex aileron systems, like lets say a Beech 99 or Twin Otter, also certified under part 23. So one cannot say they will respond identically to control inputs and they don't. Many of the Pipers can be flown virtually with your feet on the floor, as the rudder/aileron interconnect is quite good. My Cessna 305 a part 23 aircraft flew nothing like an early 182 of similar vintage, the control inputs had very different effects. One required a great deal of rudder to make similar turns.

You are right, of course. I was thinking of single engine trainers.

Since I have only taught in small stuff, I have never taught this is how to fly this airplane. I have taught this is how to fly an airplane.

And, there are a LOT of small airplanes out there that do not comply with Part 23....they were certified under CAR 3....a vastly different set of standards.

Re: Coordinating turns - embarassing question

I shouldn't have mentioned any Parts. I just find that they fly more similar than different. I really messed up with a student's Ultraflight Challenger II. He had no paperwork, I had flown something similar, and I hadn't been able to talk him into a fully controllable airplane. I didn't like the way it was flying and started an energy management turn to go back to the field. With full aileron and full rudder and forward stick, I couldn't get the wing back up before hitting the ground. It didn't hurt him much (he was in back) but it crushed my leg, broke my back, and stretched my spinal cord. Talking to guys who had flown them, I found out the rudder doesn't work at all with the doors on. Really dumb, it and me.

Re: Coordinating turns - embarassing question

A farmer from Illinois came down with his Cherokee to learn to spray. Since he couldn't afford the $14,000 ag program, I taught him in his Cherokee. Neither of us had our feet on the floor. A lot of rudder movement is required for a steep turn. The bungee only gives some rudder, not nearly enough. If we start a turn in a Cherokee or Tri-Pacer, had three of those at different times, the nose moves away from the bank initially, unless we use rudder. Ercoupe works without it. Really modern engineering, not just partial adverse yaw control. Had a couple of those at different times. I had anything that was really cheap.

They intended that control movement (stick, rudder, or throttle) would cause a normal control response. I taught single engine land; in nearly all of them. The FAA and I assumed that we could teach expecting a normal control response. If we only teach a certain make or model, we give the impression that they are different. This can confuse a student.
