Corroded wheel half

Well, I dun messed up now A-A-ron.

I have had these wheels sitting in my hangar for the past year and a half. Originally they were in my garage but I moved them to the airfield to make some room for garage-type stuff.

Anyways, I noticed my 6.00x6s were getting a little worn so I decided to bring these home to grease the bearings and get them ready for install.

I had no idea that 1) my hangar leaked this much and b) these would corrode like this.

My next step is to just swap the tires onto the currently-mounted wheels, and start looking for another wheel half to get this set back up to snuff so I can build up a spare with 6x6s to fit under the wheel pants (should I ever wish to install them). Anyone have an extra wheel half sitting around?

Anyways, I may be the only idiot to do this but just in case anyone else was storing wheels in a leaky hangar I thought I'd share my mistake.

Cam... I have pair of wheels in my hangar in Georgia... unfortunately I won't be there for a month at least. You are welcome to fly down there and retrieve them if you need to. The airport guys can open my hangar. I guarantee the price is right. :D KOPN Keep me posted if you don't find any. Keith

Re: Corroded wheel half

One of the lessons I learned with my hangar is that although the roof doesn't leak much, and I installed a piece of rubber hose across the door opening that pretty effectively prevents water from coming under the doors, the real water problems come from the T hangar on the backside of mine--water gets into his hangar and flows under the walls into mine. So until I move everything away from the walls and spray-foam the juncture of the walls and floor some day when I feel especially energetic, I have most things up on pallets that I made out of plywood and 2x4s. That's kept things semi-dry. Of course, Colorado is a pretty arid climate, so unless something's sitting in water, it's not likely to get any corrosion.

I REALLY should have kept these up on a pallet. Lesson learned. Thanks for the advice!

Re: Corroded wheel half

FWIW years ago I bought a singe Cleveland wheel & rotor from Perferred Airparts for a pretty reasonable price.
They have a lot of various NOS (new old stock) parts.

Re: Corroded wheel half

Airframes will sell a replacement half and it is Cast A356-T6 which is less likely to corrode. The are a copy of a Cleveland and are anodized black.
