Over at Big Creek Idaho on Monday at around noon a couple from San Diego, CA flew a Mooney in. They came in hot, ate half the runway, bounced on one of the Big Creek "Rollers", attempted a go around, and crashed in to a pickup truck at the end of the runway going pretty fast. It was a pretty nasty wreck, but it could have been a lot worse, as there was no fire with the plane leaking lots of fuel and truck having a propane tank in it. Both souls on board survived. One of them was injured pretty seriously.
The lesson: Don't take your plane in to Big Creek Idaho and attempt a go-around from mid-field at 9000 ft + density altitude! Sea Levelers beware- your plane does not climb at nearly 10000' density altitude like it does at 10'. High density altitude is a very real factor that should not be neglected when determining your conduct as a person of the air.
Many of the back country strips are not really suitable for a go-around. Big Creek is one of these if you have touched down mid-field.
